Dubové lies on the left bank of the Turiec River, on the northeastern slopes of the Žiar Mountains. The surrounding area combines open land and dense forests with a large wetland; old masonry houses shape the village’s appearance. A cycling route, forest path and cultural history offer different points of reference when planning a stay.
Landscape Between Forest and Wetland
About half of the municipal area is free of forest, while the rest is characterised by dense woodland. The area is known for its abundant mushrooms in summer and autumn. The municipality is also home to a carbonated mineral spring, located between the road and the Turiec River.
The 750-hectare Mokrade Turca (Turiec Wetlands) wetland also includes the cadastral area of Dubové. It is home to rare, endangered and critically endangered species, and serves as a migration corridor for waterbirds. It is also a spawning and nursery area for native fish and other aquatic animals. Alongside forests and open land, the wetland’s ecological importance is therefore a key part of the landscape.
Cycling Route and Forest Path
The Dubové–Požehy–Štubňa cycling route, number 8474, is six kilometres long and classified as an easy recreational MTB route. It runs along asphalt and paved paths, starts outside Dubové and passes through the village.
A forest path leads from the nearby spas in Turčianske Teplice through Diviacky háj to Dubové. The cycling route is classified as an easy recreational MTB route; the forest path passes through Diviacky háj.
Village History and Architecture
Old masonry houses with raised side entrances shape the character of the village. The entrances are adapted to the gently uneven terrain: the architecture follows the contours of the land rather than treating it as mere scenery. A bell tower dating from 1873 stands in the upper part of Dubové.
The first written mention of Dubové dates from 1262, when the village was referred to as Doboa. The Dvor roľnícky farmstead is also part of the village’s historic character: the buildings at house numbers 60 and 170 are national cultural monuments and are listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number 11973/1-2. A monument commemorates those who fell in the fighting of 1944 and is listed as a monument site among the national cultural monuments.
Ensemble and Theatre
The Prameň folk ensemble has been based in Dubové since 1983. It performs on various occasions at the local cultural centre, in other municipalities and at other events; specific performances may vary. During the Carnival season, ensemble members sing and dance through the village, although the specific programme may also vary from year to year.
Dubové also has amateur theatre groups for adults and children. If you would like to plan a performance or show into your trip, check the current schedule. This lets you arrange your stay around actual events, while the cycling route, landscape and architecture offer different ways to experience the village regardless.
