When planning a stay in Stankovany, you can choose from several focuses: a circular hike on Šíp, the cultural heritage of Podšíp, paths to springs and historic architecture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether mountain hiking, architectural history or natural sites should shape your stay.

Hiking on Šíp

Šíp is the highest peak in the Šípska Fatra. The circular hike from Stankovany is 11.1 km long, involves 775 metres of ascent and 775 metres of descent, and takes 4.25 hours. It is considered moderately difficult. The ascent offers views; the landscape also features a ridge with rock formations, mountain meadows and preserved woodland. This is therefore a hike lasting several hours, not just a short walk. Check the current route before setting out, as paths may change.

Steep sections of the hike are unsuitable for small children; otherwise, the tour is suitable for children. The 302-hectare Šíp area is designated a national nature reserve because rare plant and animal species are found there. The landscape and protected status give the hike two distinct focuses: the views and the mountain’s natural environment.

A special annual event is the ascent of Šíp on the last Sunday in April. It takes place every year; in Podšíp, the occasion includes folk music, beer on tap or Kofola, and goulash. Check the date and specific arrangements before travelling.

Podšíp: Log Houses and Trails

Podšíp was designated a heritage zone in 1991. Six houses with farm buildings in traditional log construction have been preserved there: the buildings are made of round or hewn logs. This makes the place a cultural destination in its own right, alongside the hike on Šíp.

Podšíp is accessible only on foot or by bicycle; motorised visitors cannot reach the settlement. A blue-marked cycle route and a green-marked hiking trail lead there from Stankovany. The green trail passes the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. Check current access conditions and trail markings before travelling, as they may change. The chapel was built in 1832 in gratitude for the community’s survival of a cholera epidemic.

Springs and Protected Natural Sites

Two springs lie west of Stankovany and can be distinguished by their distance. Sírny prameň is about 1 km west, beside the railway line, and can be reached by a forest path. Mädokýš pod lesom is about 2 km west and is also accessible on foot via a forest path. A small wooden shelter covers this spring; hikers use it for drinking water. Local paths may change, so it is a good idea to check trail conditions before setting out.

The Močiar nature reserve is nearby, beside the railway line. The Sírny medokýš spring is located at its edge, where visitors can collect mineral water. Another distinctive feature of the area is a travertine formation designated a natural monument: a mineral spring lies in a crater, with a circular lake at the summit. It was designated a natural monument in 1971.

Church, Museum and Getting There

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a historicist Neo-Gothic building dating from 1898 to 1901. It has a cruciform floor plan, with chapels attached to the building. The tower is 38 metres high and has a pyramidal roof. Inside are an altar, statues and Stations of the Cross from the Ferdinand Stuflesser Tyrolean carving workshop. Twenty modern stained-glass windows are by Ladislav Záborský.

Stankovská izba is a small local museum with old tools, furniture and household items. Visitors are welcome; arrange your visit with the municipal office and confirm the appointment before travelling. Passenger trains serve Stankovany on the main railway line. As timetables may change, check the connection for your travel date.
