The Ľubochnianska Valley is the longest valley in the Veľká Fatra mountains. In Ľubochňa, marked trails meet traces of an unusual industrial history, a spa park and historic buildings. You can explore the town according to the focus of your trip: hiking and cycling, learning about the history of the forest railway, or taking a cultural and historical tour. Which of these aspects you include depends on whether you are looking for scenery, architecture or winter activities.
Nature Trail and Marked Routes
The Ľubochňa–Dolina nature trail starts by the municipal office. It is a self-guided circular route for hiking and cycling and can be used in both summer and winter. Ten stops and an introductory information board define its layout. The starting point and circular route give the tour a clear framework, while you can explore each section at your own pace.
For cycling, a green-marked route leads from Ľubochňa through the Ľubochnianska Valley. The surface and access conditions on the cycling route may change, so check the latest conditions before setting out. Marked hiking trails also offer different directions: A yellow-marked trail starts at the railway station and leads over Mount Havran towards Ostré. A red-marked trail starts in the centre, passes the Korbeľka Nature Reserve and leads to Mount Kopa, which offers views of the Váh Valley. Trail conditions may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.
Another green-marked hiking trail leads from the railway station to the Prameň Mária spring. The spring and its surroundings, including a pond, provide a place to rest. You can therefore choose from several described destinations: a loop on the nature trail, a route through the valley or a trail to the spring. This information does not specify walking times, so plan according to the conditions and the time you have set aside for the trip.
Forest Railway and the History of Technology
The Ľubochnianska Forest Railway was built in 1903–1904 as a narrow-gauge railway to transport timber out of the Ľubochnianska Valley. It was the first electrified railway in Central Europe. It occasionally also carried tourists and spa guests. These journeys are part of the railway’s history: it is no longer in operation and is therefore not a current train service for excursions.
The hydroelectric power plant was built in 1904 on the site of an ironworks. Visits are possible by arrangement; contact them in advance to arrange a visit. Information panels in the rooms describe the history of this technical monument. As well as trails, the site offers insight into earlier forms of wood processing and energy generation, although it is not possible to take a ride on the historic forest railway.
Spa Park and Historic Buildings
Kúpeľný park is a landscaped park with Art Nouveau elements. Winding paths lead to small architectural features, interesting vistas, a pavilion, rest areas and a fountain. The park also contains an original lime tree avenue dating from the late 19th century. The paths and park features make this area a destination in its own right, alongside the longer hiking and cycling routes.
Kollárov dom is also part of the town’s architectural heritage: the historic building is in the spa-resort style and is distinguished by characteristic wooden balconies. The church in Ľubochňa adds several specific dates to this history. Prelate Andrej Hlinka laid its foundation stone in 1937; the church was blessed on 29 June 1938. It was renovated in its present form during the tenure of the clergyman Ondrej Poľančík. Mons. František Tondra consecrated it on 3 July 1998.
Seasonal Events
Rezbárske dni is held regularly in August. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant year. In winter, the 850-metre-long Vyšné Krátke slope is another option: when there is sufficient natural snow, it offers good conditions for family skiing. This applies specifically when there is sufficient snow; check the current conditions before planning to use the slope.
