Kalameny combines a thermal spring in the Kalamenská Valley with a nature trail to the ruins of Liptovský Castle. The spring is in the Choč Mountains, about 1 km north of the village. The nature trail starts in the village centre, first leads to the spring and bathing pond, then continues across meadows and through forest to the castle remains. This brings bathing, scenery and a historic destination together along a described route.
Thermal Spring and Bathing Pond
The thermal spring comes from an artificial borehole drilled in 1991–1992. Its water is about 33°C. The pond at the spring is used for public bathing year-round; conditions may vary in practice. If bathing is a key part of your plans, check the current situation before visiting.
The spring is not only a destination in its own right, but also the first stop on the way to the castle grounds. This makes Kalameny appealing if you want to include bathing and a route through different types of landscape in your trip. The water temperature given refers to the spring; the pond is where public bathing takes place.
The Kalameny Castle Trail
The Kalameny–Liptovský Castle nature trail runs from the village centre to the thermal spring and bathing pond, then continues across meadows and through the forest to the ruins. Along with the landscape, it provides information about the history of Kalameny and Liptovský Castle, local geology, the water cycle and the forest. Water and geology are presented alongside local and castle history; the route links these themes with its meadow and forest sections.
The starting point is easy to identify: the “Kalameny,,kult.dom” bus stop is right at the beginning of the nature trail. There is a paid car park by the church at the starting point in the village centre. This information can help you plan where to join the route without assuming that the spring and the nature trail have different starting points.
Liptovský Castle: History and Views
Liptovský Castle was built in the Middle Ages on 993 m-high Sestrč. The castle was built in 1262 during the reign of King Béla IV and demolished in 1474 on the orders of King Matthias Corvinus. Today, the uncovered foundations are freely accessible to the public; the site is a national cultural monument. The castle’s history can thus be connected with the visible destination at the end of the nature trail.
From Liptovský Castle, there are views of the Western Tatras, the Liptov Basin, the Low Tatras, part of the Greater Fatra and the distinctive Veľký Choč. The views add vistas across several landscapes to the historical focus. When choosing what to see, you can therefore decide whether to focus mainly on the castle remains, the views, or the nature trail’s themes and landscape sections.
The Roman Catholic church in Kalameny, with its interior paintings, is another part of the village’s cultural heritage. Together, the spring, route and castle offer different things to explore during a stay: a publicly used bathing pond, a nature trail covering natural and historical themes, and the freely accessible foundations of the cultural monument.
