In Rabčice, diverse aspects of nature meet a distinctive cultural history and practical experiences centred on exercise and food. Visitors choosing the village for a stay can explore different interests: protected landscapes and old trees, a winter cross-country ski march, a cycling route, and hands-on activities featuring regional food.

Landscape Protection and Old Trees

Rabčice lies in the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area, in Zone D, which has the second level of protection. The peatlands in the Rabčické bory locality have a different classification: they belong to Zone B, which has the fourth level of protection. At cadastral-area level, Rabčice is also part of the Horná Orava Special Protection Area in the Natura 2000 network. This area is important for international bird protection. The information therefore refers to different geographical areas and protection classifications: the village, the peatlands in a named locality, and the cadastral area.

Two protected trees make these nature facts especially vivid. A large-leaved lime tree stands in the cemetery, and the municipality estimates that it is about 350 years old. It is 27 metres tall, its trunk circumference is 680 centimetres, and its crown is 18 metres wide. The wych elm near house or cottage No. 422 at the village entrance is estimated to be 250 years old. At 35 metres, it is taller; its trunk circumference is 455 centimetres, and its crown measures 20 metres. Both trees have been protected since 1974. By comparison, the lime tree has the larger trunk circumference, while the elm is taller and has the wider crown.

Cultural History in Rabčice

The settlement’s history dates back to before 1612. That year, Juraj Turzo recognised Jakub Ramža’s efforts and the difficulties he faced in founding the village. Folklore also has its own history: the Rabčičanka group was founded in 1973 to revive the customs of Rabčice and Gorál songs. The Kašunka children’s folk ensemble was established in 1982. The children were taught the Gorál dialect word by word, at a time when it was in decline. The two ensembles thus represent different, specifically identified aspects of the cultural heritage: customs and songs on the one hand, and passing on the language to children on the other.

Winter Event and Cycling Route

Gorálová bežka is a winter cross-country ski march, a tradition Rabčice established in 2007. The event is organised in January or February, depending on the weather. The march is described as following a route of about 20 kilometres through the cadastral area; its length may vary from one edition to another.

Another activity on offer is a cross-border cycling route. In October 2021, a 4.2-kilometre section was built in Rabčice. The route follows existing roads and passes through forest and grassland. A tourist and cycling map is also available to help visitors find their way around the village. These are different ways to get active: a weather-dependent winter march and a cycling section whose route is described as following roads and passing through different types of landscape.

Take Part and Discover Local Food

At Salaš u Štefana, visitors can make their own Oštiepok. Together with their hosts, they can also bake Moskôľ and serve it with cracklings, bryndza or blueberry jam. The two activities have different focuses: one centres on making Oštiepok, while the other involves baking and choosing from the listed accompaniments. The salaš is at the upper end of Rabčice, four kilometres from the village entrance.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Rabčice, you can plan your travel dates around the experiences that matter to you. The January or February timing of Gorálová bežka depends on the weather; the cycling route and hands-on culinary activities offer other themes for your trip. This lets you choose Rabčice based on specific interests in nature, culture and activities, without combining the different offerings into one fixed programme.
