Oravská Lesná offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: a technical marvel on rails, educational trails covering nature and forestry, and evidence of local religious and Goral culture. Winter sports are also on offer, but depend on seasonal conditions. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether the narrow-gauge railway, walking trails, culture or snow activities will be your main focus.

Narrow-gauge railway and crafts

The Oravská lesná železnica is one of the few surviving narrow-gauge switchback railways in the world and a unique technical monument. The journey to the Sedlo Beskyd mountain station covers three kilometres and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Near the station, an observation tower offers panoramic views of the Orava landscape. If you are planning the journey, check the timetable in advance.

At Tanečník station, the Remeselný dom presents various crafts typical of Orava. Alongside the railway’s technical distinction, local craft traditions offer a separate cultural focus.

Educational trails and practical route choices

The Náučný chodník Oravská Lesná starts in the centre of Oravská Lesná and offers three walking routes. Along the educational trail, 40 information panels cover natural history, forestry and nature conservation. The forestry educational trail is more than four kilometres long. Route 1 is accessible to people with disabilities, cyclists and strollers; the educational trail is closed in winter.

Access by car is prohibited to several remote forest destinations, including Kaplnka Sedembolestnej Panny Márie; these destinations should be visited by bicycle. The recommended route to the chapel takes about 45 minutes by bicycle. This makes route choice an important part of planning: for the educational trail, there are different walking routes to choose from, while the specified forest destinations are intended to be reached by bicycle.

Churches, monuments and local history

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne in Oravská Lesná was built in 1914 in the modern Art Nouveau style and is designated a national cultural monument. The statue of the Madonna and Child is also a national cultural monument. It was erected in 1820 as a votive offering after the end of a plague epidemic.

Another trace of the past is the Chapel of Divine Mercy. It stands on the site of Oravská Lesná’s first wooden church, built in 1739 in honour of Saint Anne. A Stations of the Cross was added beside Kaplnka Sedembolestnej Panny Márie in 2022; it was built and consecrated that same year.

Goral culture, winter sports and stargazing

The “Gorali včera a dnes” exhibition at Sedlo Beskyd station is devoted to the Gorals’ way of life and their homes. Its themes include traditional folk architecture, costumes, and calendar and family customs. It offers a cultural perspective distinct from the sacred buildings and the railway’s technical history.

The Orava Snow winter sports centre has two lifts and seven downhill runs with a total length of 8.5 kilometres. There are also five kilometres of cross-country ski trails. Operating conditions may vary by season, as does the grooming of the trails. Lyžiarska škola Yeti offers skiing and snowboarding lessons for children and adults, as well as beginners and advanced learners.

At Hvezdáreň u pána Mojmíra, visitors can observe stars and, in exceptional conditions, planets; observation depends on the conditions. The observatory has several astronomical telescopes, including the largest amateur astronomy telescope in Slovakia and the country’s second-largest telescope. School classes and visitor groups must arrange their visit in advance.
