The Oravská priehrada gives Námestovo a distinctive landmark: the 35 km² reservoir is one of the largest in Slovakia and connects travel planning with water sports, facilities along the shore, and the cultural history of Slanický ostrov umenia. The skatepark in Námestovo is a large concrete skatepark located right on the shore of the Oravská priehrada. Its central area includes a funbox, a spin, and a bowl with a platform. The multi-level street line features rails, boxes, and a long curb for skaters and bikers. Alongside parkour and street workout, the focus is therefore also on specific skatepark features and facilities for bikers.

History and seasonal visits to Slanický ostrov umenia

Slanický ostrov umenia has a special historical connection to the Oravská priehrada. Slanica and four other villages disappeared beneath the reservoir, while Slanický ostrov umenia remained as an island. The Baroque church and Calvary on the island were once the dominant feature of Slanica. This history gives a visit to the island a different focus from the sports facilities along the shore.

The church houses the exhibition “Slovenská tradičná ľudová plastika a maľba.” Outdoors, the “Oravská kamenárska tvorba” exhibition on Orava stonework from the 18th and 19th centuries adds to the cultural offerings. The church and outdoor exhibition therefore differ both in location and subject: one exhibition is housed in the historic church, while the other is devoted to stonework.

Slanický ostrov umenia can only be visited during the season. The island is accessible by excursion boat.
