Sučany offers several options for a stay: an educational trail in the built-up area, cultural and historical monuments, and nature-related activities ranging from climbing to fishing. To help you choose, it is worth considering the different questions these places raise: where do trail measurements take centre stage, and where historical context or activities in nature?

An educational trail with specific measurements

The Sučiansky historicko-náučný chodník is located in the built-up area of Sučany. It is a linear trail that can be used year-round on foot and by bicycle. The route is 3 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 24 metres. Length and elevation difference describe two different aspects: the extent of the trail and the change in elevation. When choosing, you can consider these two measurements separately as you weigh up trail length and elevation profile.

There are opportunities to hike from Sučany into the Sučianska dolina. Several cycling routes are also accessible from Sučany. When choosing activities, you can therefore take into account both the specific educational trail and hiking and cycling as interests.

Nature themes: rock, valley and lake

There are several equipped climbing routes on Sučianska Skala. The upper areas of the rock offer views of the Great and Little Fatra. Climbing and the views are two different aspects of this place; the views described are from the upper areas.

Sučianska dolina lies on the southern side of the Krivánska Malá Fatra. The Pod Rígľom nature reserve is located at the entrance to the valley. It covers 14.23 hectares and is under the fifth level of protection. The Biely potok flows through Sučianska dolina. Together, the mountain setting, nature reserve and stream give the landscape different geographical points of reference; there are also opportunities to hike from Sučany into Sučianska dolina.

Lake Ontário is located in the cadastral area of Sučany. It is used for boating and is also an attractive area for anglers. For choosing according to personal interests, this is a different focus from the climbing routes on Sučianska Skala or the hiking opportunities in the valley: boating and fishing take centre stage at the lake.

Cultural monuments and their historical periods

The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the oldest architectural monument in the territory of Sučany. It was built in the last quarter of the 13th century and was originally Early Gothic. In 1964, it was declared a national cultural monument. The construction date and the monument’s designation are two separate historical points of reference.

The pillory of Sučany is a cultural monument from the first half of the 19th century. Together with the church, it shows a chronological contrast between a structure dating from the last quarter of the 13th century and a monument from the 19th century. The church’s designation as a national cultural monument in 1964 is a separate, later point of reference. You can therefore consider the cultural monuments both in terms of their historical context and the period that interests you.
