Košťany Nad Turcom lies on the floodplain of the Turiec River. Two distinct topics are relevant when planning a trip here: historic architecture and cycling routes, each of which involves the town in a different way. The buildings represent different periods and uses; the cycling routes differ both in their courses and in the types of bicycles specified. When choosing a place to stay, you can therefore first consider whether cultural history, cycling or a combination of the two is more important to you.

The Kaštieľ: Design and Renovation

The Kaštieľ of Košťany Nad Turcom is a single-storey building with an L-shaped floor plan and stucco-decorated façades. A Rococo-classical country residence, it dates to the second half of the 18th century and was created by renovating an older building.

The building’s form offers several ways to view it: the L-shaped floor plan describes its layout, the single-storey construction its height, and the stucco its façade decoration. The renovation is also part of its historical context. The country residence developed from an older building rather than being built without a predecessor. Its architectural history thus brings together an older starting point and its classification as a country residence in the second half of the 18th century. In August 2026, reconstruction of the Kaštieľ was still underway.

Cultural Monuments and the History of the Houses

Another cultural monument is Kúria No. 214. It is a national cultural monument with ÚZPF number 566/1. Rodný dom Jána Páričku adds a specific history of use to these architectural landmarks: in the first half of the 19th century, it was originally built as an inn for the Juštovský family, by the roadside. Since September 1997, a plaque honouring Ján Párička has been located there.

The house also became a meeting place for Slovak representatives of the national revival movement from Martin and the surrounding area. Thus, hospitality, commemoration and regional exchange come together here. Rodný dom Andreja Polonca was built in 1843. The houses therefore offer different historical reference points: for one, its former use as an inn and the commemorative plaque are noted; for the other, a specific year of construction.

Historical Milestones of the Town

The earliest documentary records of Košťany Nad Turcom date from 1323, when the town was mentioned as “villa Coschan.” Another focus of the town’s history is the 18th and 19th centuries: agriculture was the residents’ main occupation in both centuries. After the abolition of serfdom in 1848, crafts and trade began to develop.

These milestones provide further context for the history of the houses. The documentary mention marks an early written reference to the town; the information about agriculture, crafts and trade describes later developments in people’s livelihoods. Together with the construction dates and the former use of Rodný dom Jána Páričku, these offer different ways to explore the history of Košťany Nad Turcom, rather than limiting it to a single building or period.

Cycling: Comparing Two Routes

There are also two different options to consider when choosing a route. The Znievska cycling route passes through Košťany Nad Turcom on its way from Turčianske Teplice to Martin and is suitable for trekking and road bikes. The Tanková cesta is a circular cycling route; the complete loop includes Košťany Nad Turcom. It is suitable for mountain and trekking bikes.

The route type and bicycle type are useful for comparison: the Znievska route has named endpoints, Turčianske Teplice and Martin, while the Tanková is distinguished by its circular route. Trekking bikes are suitable for both routes; road bikes are also specified for the Znievska, and mountain bikes for the Tanková. You can compare the two options using the route types and suitable bicycle types explicitly described here.
