Východná combines two distinct folklore events with a historic village center, museums and opportunities for excursions. The Východná Folklore Festival features dance, music and crafts, among other things; the Ovenálie focuses on sheep farming and tastings. Other attractions include church architecture, a permanent exhibition and an MTB route. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific dates for that year's event.

Folklore events in June and July

The Východná Folklore Festival takes place every year on the first weekend of July. Its first edition was held in 1953. Recurring program features include dance, music, singing and creative craft workshops, as well as programs for children. Individual offerings may vary from year to year. The festival is also included in programs of the International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art (C.I.O.F.F.).

The Ovenálie is a recurring sheep-farming festival held in the Východná amphitheater. It traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in June; the exact calendar date changes from year to year. The program includes tastings of sheep's cheese, bryndza and meat specialties, as well as demonstrations of how sheep's cheese and bryndza are made. The two events have different focuses: folklore and workshops in July, and sheep farming and tastings in June. If your stay depends on attending an event, check the specific dates against your plans.

Historic village center and museums

The historic village center of Východná was declared a protected heritage zone in 1991. The oldest part includes timber and masonry buildings whose gables face the main street. Small traditional homes display other typical architectural features: they were built of wood and have two small windows on the gabled façade, a shingle roof and a covered entrance area. The village's history can therefore also be read in the construction and orientation of its houses.

The Evangelical church was built in 1926–1927 to a design by architect Michal Milan Harminc. Its neo-Gothic façade has three-part pointed-arch windows and decorative buttresses. The altar is also neo-Gothic and features an older painting of the Crucifixion by Karol Prúnyi. The building's architectural history and the painting offer different points of interest for visitors to the church.

Two museums combine historic buildings with present-day use: Drevenica z Východnej was built around 1910 and now serves as a museum with contemporary interiors. Východnianska múranica dates from 1921 and is likewise used as a museum with contemporary interiors. Another cultural stop is Stanica Svet Martina Sabaku: its permanent exhibition of unusual works by Martin Sabaka is housed in a specially designed hall at Farma Východná.

The historic Magna Via road also passed through Východná.

Rivers, observation tower and MTB route

The Biely Váh flows through the area of Východná, while the Čierny Váh runs through its southern part. The area’s northern boundary lies in the High Tatras. These geographic features are therefore in different locations: one river flows through the area, the other through its southern section, while the High Tatras mark the northern boundary.

Rozhľadňa Májka observation tower is a short walk of about five minutes from the parking lot beside the main entrance to the festival grounds. There are wooden sculptures and a small children's playground around the tower. Visitor information may change, so check access details before your visit.

For a longer ride, the “Horná nádrž Čierny Váh z Východnej” MTB route starts in Východná and ends at the Čierny Váh reservoir. It is 12.7 km long and rated moderate. Check the route information before setting off.

Plan your journey

Most long-distance buses stop in Východná; regional buses also run from Liptovský Mikuláš and Poprad. Východná railway station is in the village's namesake district, about 3.5 km from the village, and is directly connected by bus. Check the timetables for your travel date, especially if you plan to combine train and bus. This will help you choose the most suitable arrival point without confusing the station's location with the village itself.
