At the entrance to Prosiecka Valley, approached from Veľké Borové, lies a natural grassy basin formed by erosion. During spring rains and snowmelt, it can fill with water almost to the rim and drain again within 15 to 20 minutes. This phenomenon depends on the season and the weather. It is this rapid change that makes the grassy basin an unusual natural feature: its impression is shaped not only by the landscape’s form, but also by how it changes over a short period.

Hiking Trails and Views

The Súšava observation tower has a distinctive history: it is a rebuilt transformer station designed in the style of traditional folk architecture. The circular route to the tower is considered an easy hike. It is 3.1 kilometres long, with 160 metres of ascent and the same amount of descent, and takes 1.05 hours. Check the route details again if trail conditions or mapping change. From the tower’s gallery, you can see the Roháče, Skorušinské vrchy and Chočské vrchy mountain ranges, as well as the Oravská pahorkatina upland. The loop combines a hike with clearly specified figures and far-reaching views across several named mountain landscapes.

At the southern end of Veľké Borové, an educational trail runs through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys. Its twelve stops cover geographical, biological and historical topics. This gives the trail a different focus from the route to Súšava: rather than views from the gallery, it highlights different aspects of the valleys along the way. The watermills of Oblazy, in nearby Kvačianska Gorge, are part of this educational trail. In the nearby settlement of Oblazy, the municipality of Veľké Borové had the so-called “brunčiakovská” Lower Watermill built. The reconstructed saw can be viewed at the Lower Mill; check in advance whether a visit is possible at your preferred time.

The Ráztocký waterfall plunges about eight metres into a rocky gorge and is accessible from Veľké Borové. After severe storms, check accessibility locally. A local eatery is also located in Veľké Borové on the route through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys and serves refreshments. Before your trip, check whether it will be open on your chosen date.

Church Art and Neoclassical Buildings

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (“Kostol Povýšenia sv. Kríža”) is a neoclassical building dating from 1823. It was built on the site of an older wooden place of worship. Inside are wall paintings from the 1940s, including “Oplakávanie Krista” and depictions of the four Evangelists. The church also contains a late Baroque altar of the Holy Family from the first half of the 18th century and a baptismal font dating from the end of the 18th century. The church is considered to be in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If needed, confirm its condition locally.

Another neoclassical building in Veľké Borové dates from the 19th century. The small structure features statues of Saint John the Baptist and the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Together with the church, it shows that the local cultural landmarks are not limited to a single period: the church contains works from several centuries, while the smaller building and its statues add another facet to the local heritage.

Planning Highlights

The different themes can help guide your choice of accommodation. The circular route to the observation tower combines specific hiking details with views of four named landscapes. The educational trail, by contrast, leads through two valleys and brings together geographical, biological and historical topics with the watermills of Oblazy. The waterfall, grassy basin and historic buildings round out this selection with further natural and cultural features. Consider what you would like to focus on during your stay, then decide which discoveries to include in your travel plans.
