Pavčina Lehota lies at the entrance to the Demänovská Valley and brings together several distinct themes for planning your trip: an educational hiking trail, the Jelšie Nature Reserve, activities in Žiarce and historic buildings. You can choose which to focus on based on your interests and the time of year. The village is accessible by car or bus. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable before setting off.
Hiking, cross-country skiing and views
The Náučný turistický chodník Pavčina Lehota educational trail is suitable for hiking. In winter, a cross-country ski trail is groomed along the route. This gives you a seasonal distinction to consider when planning: hiking on the educational trail and cross-country skiing on the trail groomed in winter. The Dlhý okruh loop around Pavčina Lehota adds another option, with an interesting section along the Jelšie protected area. It is a loop around Pavčina Lehota; the section by the protected area gives it a specific connection to nature.
The Vyhliadková veža v Pavčinej Lehote observation tower is another way to take in the surrounding landscape. The tower offers views of the area. Together with the educational trail and the Dlhý okruh, this gives you a choice between a route, a loop with a section along the protected area, and a viewpoint. Each option has a different focus, without requiring you to compare a long list of similar activities.
Jelšie: protected floodplain forest
The Jelšie Nature Reserve lies northeast of Pavčina Lehota on the floodplain of the Demänovka River. It covers 26.10 hectares and lies at approximately 670 to 690 metres above sea level. The reserve protects an ash-alder forest community. The woodland includes coppiced alder, with scattered spruce and ash trees. Jelšie is a protected area on the floodplain of the Demänovka River, with an ash-alder forest community.
For orientation, it is worth distinguishing the protected area from the trail: Jelšie is the nature reserve; the Dlhý okruh follows an interesting section alongside it. If you want to include both nature and exercise in your plans, you can take this relationship into account without treating the entire loop as part of the protected area.
Žiarce: toboggan run and winter sports
The Bobová dráha Žiarce toboggan run is 1,000 metres long and suitable for adults and children aged seven and over. According to the operator, it was the first track of its kind in Slovakia. The toboggan run offers something different from hiking or cross-country skiing: the track itself and its length are the main attractions. As seasonal operating conditions may change, check whether it is open before your visit.
At the SKI Žiarce ski resort, you can ski on illuminated slopes in the evening; there is also a ski school. Availability is seasonal, and the ski school may also operate seasonally. So before your trip, check which of these two options will be available during your visit. The Sport & Relax Žiarce ski resort is a separate facility: it is located in Pavčina Lehota at the entrance to the Demänovská Valley and has two downhill runs with a total length of 1,130 metres. As facilities may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before your trip.
Hradisko and the bell tower
South of Pavčina Lehota, on Opálenisko Mountain in the Low Tatras, lies Hradisko, an Iron Age hillfort with ramparts. Another Hradisko near Pavčina Lehota is Zámček. It was declared a cultural monument on 27 October 1967. Its northeastern section forms an acropolis and served as a small castle complex in the early Middle Ages, in the 13th century. These two place names therefore refer to different historical sites.
Another cultural and historical feature in the village is the wooden bell tower of Pavčina Lehota. It was built in 1883 and is designated a cultural monument. Its original log construction and carved sound openings give it a distinctive architectural character. Together with the Hradisko on Opálenisko and Hradisko Zámček, the bell tower offers another point of interest, different in both structure and period from the nature and activities in Žiarce.
