Liptovské Kľačany lies at the entrance to the Kľačianska Valley. Most of the village is located below the summit of Chabenec, within the protected area of the Low Tatras National Park. Valley and mountain trails, a cycling route that passes through the village, and local church history offer different perspectives on the area.
Cycling and hiking trails
The N2401 – Vlkolínec – Pribylina educational cycling route passes through Liptovské Kľačany. There is also a junction of cycling routes at the entrance to the village. These are two distinct details for orientation: a specifically named route through the village and a route junction at the entrance. Check trail markings and conditions before setting off.
On foot, the routes described differ in their starting and ending points. One hiking trail leads from the Kľačianska Valley to Magurka. Another marked trail runs from Tajch via Magurka to the Latiborská hoľa saddle. Magurka is the stated destination on the first trail and an intermediate point on the second, which continues to the saddle. A third marked route leads from the settlement of Železnô via Magurka and the 1,520-metre-high Mestská hora to the main ridge below Malý Chabenec. The elevation given refers to Mestská hora. Trail conditions can vary by season; check them before your hike.
There are numerous easy walks in the forests around Liptovské Kľačany. Visitors can also hike through the Kľačianska Valley; an ascent via Brestovec leads to Ľupčianska Magura at an elevation of 1,315 metres. The options described therefore range from easy walks and a route through the valley to an ascent with a specific elevation target.
The natural environment of the Low Tatras
The Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site includes the cadastral area of Liptovské Kľačany. The Nízke Tatry protected area is characterised by habitats dominated mainly by coniferous forests, complemented by meadows and pastures. Protected forest bird species include the golden eagle, hazel grouse, capercaillie, three-toed woodpecker, boreal owl, Eurasian pygmy owl and hazel grouse. The natural environment thus encompasses both specific landscape types and named protected species.
The church and local history
The present-day Church of Saint Elizabeth stands on the site of a Gothic church dating from 1339. The current building was constructed from 1878 to 1889 in the Historicist style. The dates refer to two different construction phases: the Gothic predecessor and the present building. The church preserves two Baroque paintings from the mid-18th century, as well as a late-Baroque tabernacle with cherubim. The interior thus brings together older Baroque furnishings and the later Historicist church building.
There are also remains of partisan bunkers in the Kľačianska Valley. Before visiting, check whether these traces are currently visible.
