Several travel interests come together in Liptovská Sielnica: the history of a village submerged by the Liptovská Mara reservoir, waterside activities and experiences with animals. You can get to know the area through both its past and the leisure activities it offers today.

Village History and Remembrance

The oldest surviving written mention of Sielnica dates back to 1256. At the time, the village was royal property and part of the Liptov castle estate belonging to King Béla IV. The original settlement was later submerged by the Liptovská Mara reservoir. The new settlement was officially opened on 25 August 1974 and lies about two kilometres north of the original village.

The Miniskanzen zatopených obcí commemorates the history and culture of thirteen villages submerged by Liptovská Mara. Information panels and historical photographs show houses, churches, schools and other buildings from the affected settlements. A surviving fragment of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on the shore of Liptovská Mara is also one of the most distinctive memorial sites: it is visible from afar, is considered one of the oldest churches in Liptov and is a much-visited place.

Further details about the history of the churches add to this picture. The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built between 1991 and 1997; the parish describes it as one of the newest churches in Liptov. The Evangelical church was consecrated on 9 August 1992, after the construction of a new church and tower had been approved. The Gréta Run is another part of local event life: the running event has been held for several consecutive years. On 21 September 2025, the local volunteer fire brigade helped ensure that it ran smoothly, as it had in previous years.

Water Experiences at Liptovská Mara

Sielnická zátoka is a grassy, stony beach on Liptovská Mara. Various types of watercraft are available to rent there. Coffee, beer and quick meals in the form of snacks round out the offerings at the bay.

At Gréta Resort, an organised paddleboarding experience on Liptovská Mara is offered under the guidance of a trained instructor; refreshments are included. The launch point is on the beach at Gréta Resort, at the end of the picnic lawn in Liptovská Sielnica. The activity is seasonal and may change, so check availability before your visit.

Indoor Play, Animals and Horse Riding

Babyland has a renovated indoor hall with various activities for visits in bad weather. The indoor playground includes a two-storey maze with an obstacle course, slides and tunnels. Visitors can also feed horses and other farm animals there and take part in an animation programme. The programme may change.

At Villa Betula’s animal farm, you can see and feed horses, llamas, peacocks and other animals; the animals on the farm may change. Horse-riding options include rides on the grounds, outside the facility or in a covered riding arena, under the guidance of experienced instructors. Other offerings include hippotherapy, a basic riding course, rides in the countryside, rental of the riding arena and training with an instructor on your own horse. Horse riding is available to the public only by arranging it by phone with reception and subject to availability on the day of your visit.

Trout and Local Offerings

Rybáreň NA HÁKU is an unusual wooden complex with a private pond in Liptovská Sielnica. Visitors can catch rainbow trout or brown trout themselves and have their catch prepared on site or take it home. The menu also features baked and smoked trout, as well as fresh grilled trout fillets with olive oil and rosemary. Catch and menu options, as well as availability, may change.
