Jakubovany lies below 2,184 m-high Baranec in the Western Tatras National Park. The range of trails is useful for planning your trip: a route to the waterfall is listed with a walking time of one hour, while the route over Baranec to Žiarska dolina takes nine hours. There are also cycling routes, seasonal winter options, and traces of history above the village. You can first decide whether to focus on a short hike, a longer mountain route, or other seasonal activities.

Hiking: waterfall route or a long mountain trail

The marked route from Studená dolina to Jakuboviansky Vodopád and back has a listed walking time of one hour. The route over Baranec to Žiarska dolina takes considerably longer: it starts in Jakubovany and is listed with a walking time of nine hours. The two options therefore differ not only in the time required, but also in their course. The waterfall route returns to its starting point in Studená dolina; the longer route leads from Jakubovany over Baranec to Žiarska dolina. This gives you a concrete reference point when planning your hiking time.

The Jakubovany–Baranec educational trail also has its own planning details: it is 8.5 km long and has an elevation gain of 1,470 m. The trail is in Tatranský národný park National Park. Distance and elevation gain describe different aspects of the trail, so it is worth considering both figures together. Access in the mountains may vary seasonally. Water levels and trail conditions on the waterfall route may also change. Check that conditions are suitable before setting out.

Cycling and seasonal winter trails

A cycling route leads from Jakubovany into Račkova dolina. It can then be continued along the Tatranská magistrála to the mouth of Žiarska dolina. When planning, you can distinguish between the route into Račkova dolina and its possible continuation to the mouth of Žiarska dolina.

In winter, cross-country ski trails start in Jakubovany or lead into the village. Towards Žiarska dolina and Račkova dolina, they can connect to the Tatranská magistrála. Whether the trails are usable depends on snow conditions. The nearby Bane ski area is set in foothills below the Baranec massif and has a 500 m-long ski lift. It operates seasonally. So if you are planning a day of skiing, check in advance whether the lift will be operating during your visit.

History and local traditions

Above Jakubovany, there are remains on Vysoký Hrádok that are probably associated with a Celtic settlement. The site later served as a guard post on the trade route from the Spiš region. The possible settlement and its later role as a guard post mark two different historical functions of the same place.

In Studená dolina, visitors can watch traditional sheep herding and milking, as well as taste and buy sheep products. Availability may depend on the season and the operators’ activities. If you want to make this a definite part of your plans, confirm in advance. Studená dolina is therefore both a reference point for the waterfall route and a setting for these traditional activities—two different reasons to consider when choosing what to do.
