Ižipovce lies in the central part of the Liptov Basin, below the Choč Mountains, at an elevation of 598 m. Nature and outdoor activities shape a stay here: a limestone cave is located directly above the village, and a hiking route passes through Ižipovce. Nearby are the Prosiecka Valley and the Liptovská Mara reservoir. This makes it easy to plan different types of outings: karst formations, valley hikes and activities on the water.
Prosečné and the Karst Landscape
The Prosečné Site of European Importance covers the cadastral area of Ižipovce. The Prosečné protected area is characterised by limestone and dolomite bedrock and a typical cliff landscape. Its characteristic natural features include the deep gorges of the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys. Rocky terrain and deeply incised valleys give the surrounding area its distinctive natural character and provide a scenic setting for hiking.
Jaskyňa nad Ižipovcami
Jaskyňa nad Ižipovcami is a 20 m-long limestone cave directly above Ižipovce. It lies within the village’s cadastral area, is of fluviokarst origin and contains archaeological finds. The low entrance measures 40 × 60 cm; after about 2 m of crawling, it leads into an oval chamber. The cave’s length, rock type and shape make it interesting from different perspectives: as a karst formation and as a site with archaeological finds. The narrow entrance and crawl passage are among its distinctive features.
Hikes for Different Time Frames
The 4,294 m-long Janošíkov stôl hiking route passes through Ižipovce. An easy alpine loop hike starts in Liptovská Anna and leads to Jánošíkov stôl (Čerenová skala). It covers 8 km, with 459 m of both ascent and descent, and takes three hours. The climb to Jánošíkov stôl is considered relatively steep; there are occasional views of Liptovská Mara through the trees. Conditions and trail markings on the 4,294 m-long route may change, so check them before setting out.
The Prosiecka Valley is near Ižipovce and can also be reached on foot from the village. For a longer valley hike, a route runs through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys from Prosiek to Kvačany; it takes six hours. In the lower and upper sections of the Prosiecka Valley, more difficult stretches are negotiated with the help of fixed aids. This offers a choice between a three-hour loop hike and a six-hour valley route.
Water and Local History
The Liptovská Mara reservoir is near Ižipovce. Swimming, paddleboarding and boat trips are available in the surrounding area. These water-based activities complement the hiking options, so you can focus your outings on either valley trails or experiences at Mara.
The village’s former occupations are also part of the story of Ižipovce. Historic livelihoods and crafts included farming, cloth weaving, blacksmithing and carpentry, as well as the making of handričkové korovce. This history adds a perspective on the village’s former ways of working and its crafts to the natural attractions.
