The Žiarska Valley shapes travel planning around Žiar: it offers marked hiking trails, alpine summit destinations, and a paved road. There are also winter activities, an educational trail, and regional history. When choosing accommodation, it is worth considering your planned activities—from a shorter hike to a long mountain tour.

Landscape and Trails in the Žiarska Valley

The Žiarska Valley is part of the High Tatras National Park. A blue-marked hiking trail runs through the valley, with an indicated walking time of about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The actual duration depends on walking conditions. You can also mountain bike on forest roads in the Žiarska Valley. A six-kilometre paved road runs through the valley and ends at the Žiarska chata. Access restrictions and conditions may change; take this into account when planning your journey.

The valley is a starting point for high-mountain tours and hikes in the Žiarska, Veľká, and Bobrovecká valleys, as well as to the peaks of the Roháče, Baníkov, and Baranec. Another natural attraction is Šarafiový Waterfall. The cascade system is about 20 metres high, and its highest tier reaches approximately 3.5 metres. The two measurements describe different things: the total height of the cascades and the height of the single largest tier.

Choosing a Tour: Duration, Difficulty, and Elevation Gain

The circular hike from the Žiarska Valley to Baranec is rated difficult, is 17.4 kilometres long, and has an indicated duration of 7.5 hours. The alpine hike from the Žiarska Valley to Baníkov is very difficult. It covers 19.1 kilometres and 1,252 metres of elevation gain; the indicated duration is 6 hours and 45 minutes. By comparison, the Baníkov route is longer, while its indicated time is shorter. Planning should therefore take into account not only the time estimates, but also the difference in difficulty and the stated ascent. Conditions and access may vary by season for both routes; check before setting out.

Another option is the “Walkerským krokom k diviačej zvernici” route. It starts on an easily accessible dirt track behind the houses in the municipality of Žiar and is suitable for beginners and families with children. The Žiarska Valley educational trail has five stops and fifteen themed sections. Alongside summit tours, you can therefore choose a trail specifically suited to beginners and families, as well as a themed trail.

Winter Activities and Regional Orientation

The Žiar-Dolinky ski centre is at the end of the municipality of Žiar, at the foot of the southern slopes of the Western Tatras. The Dolinky ski centre has two ski lifts and two runs, one of which is machine-snowed. There is a floodlit run for evening skiing, as well as a ski school. Facilities and seasonal offerings may change. Check the information applicable to your travel dates before planning your activities.

History, Cave, and Remembrance

Žiar was established on cleared land toward the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century. Traditional activities of its inhabitants included catching wolves with special nets. Another connection to the mountains is the Symbolic Cemetery for the victims of the Western Tatras. Mountain rescue service staff created it in response to mountain accidents.

Medvedia štôlňa – Sv. Barborka is the only old mining site in the Liptov region that has been opened to visitors. Visitors are given a headlamp before entering; special clothing or footwear is not required. The cave is about a 20-minute walk from the Žiar, Žiarska dolina bus stop. The stop can be reached by bus from Liptovský Mikuláš. Bus services may change, so it is advisable to check the timetable before travelling. A paid car park in the Žiarska Valley is about 500 metres from the cave. Check the parking rules before your visit.

Regional Cuisine and Accommodation

Salaš Žiar serves traditional folk dishes inspired by shepherd life, as well as traditional sheep’s milk products. For accommodation in the mountains, Žiarska chata offers visitors overnight stays and meals. It is located at an elevation of 1,325 metres and is the only high-altitude mountain hut in the Western Tatras. If you are considering this type of accommodation, confirm availability before your trip.
