Bobrovník lies on the shore of the Liptovská Mara reservoir. Part of the village was flooded by the reservoir – this change is part of the landscape’s history. When planning a trip, you can consider water activities, cycling routes and cultural history as distinct interests.
Water activities and boat trips
Marina Liptov, a sports and leisure resort, is located in Bobrovník. Visitors can rent electric boats, motorboats, paddleboards and kayaks there; rental options may vary by season. Marina Liptov also offers sailing courses on Liptovská Mara, which may also be subject to seasonal availability. In addition, Marina Liptov offers trips on three types of boats. Timetables may vary by season; check the dates if you plan to take a trip.
Cycling routes of varying distances
The 8.3 km family cycling route starts at Bobrovník Municipal Office, crosses the dam and passes the church, then returns to the municipal office. Another circular route is 12.4 km long. It starts and ends at Marina Liptov and passes through Vlašky, Vlachy and the dam. The two routes differ both in length and starting point.
The themed circular route “Po stopách zaplavených obcí Liptovskej Mary” is 25.6 km long and ends in Bobrovník at Marina Liptov. It has several steep climbs and is recommended for more experienced cyclists or for an e-bike ride. At 25.6 km, it is longer than the two routes mentioned above; it is recommended for more experienced cyclists or for an e-bike ride.
History and culture
The site of the tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary is part of a settlement continuum in Liptov dating from the Neolithic to the 20th century. Admission to the tower is free; check before your visit whether any temporary changes apply. An exhibition in the tower of the former Svätomarský Church commemorates the effects of the Liptovská Mara dam on the landscape and people of Liptov. The focus is thus not only on the long history of settlement but also on the changes brought about by the reservoir.
The Havránok open-air museum is 2 km from Bobrovník. It was declared a national cultural monument in 1991, includes a reconstructed Celtic hillfort and houses a permanent exhibition of reconstructed objects from the Late Iron Age. Various events are prepared during the tourist season to introduce visitors to the daily lives of Havránok’s prehistoric inhabitants. If you want to plan around these events, check the specific dates in advance.
Sheep’s milk products and shepherding traditions
Just outside the village of Bobrovník, on the reservoir shore, is Salaš Bobrovník. It offers sheep’s milk products such as fresh cheese, smoked cheese, Oštiepky, Žinčica and Bryndza. Hot dishes include mutton goulash, Bryndzové halušky and pirozhki. At Salaš Bobrovník, you can choose between sheep’s milk products and hot dishes.
The “Shepherd’s Way” invites visitors to discover the traditional customs of shepherds of the past. Specific activities may change; check in advance if you plan to include this offering in your trip.
