Benice’s history is reflected in tangible signs: seal impressions, a surviving seal matrix, and descriptions of a coat of arms design and the flag can be distinguished by their different details. There is also an MTB route that passes through the district. This gives you two clear perspectives to consider when planning your trip: local history and cycling.

Location and Cycling Route

Benice is a district of Liptovský Mikuláš, located where the Váh flows into the Liptovská Mara reservoir. Its geographical setting is therefore connected to both the river and the reservoir.

MTB Route No. 17, “Okolo Liptovskej Mary,” runs from Liptovský Mikuláš through Benice and other places along the reservoir’s shore, before returning to Liptovský Mikuláš. Benice is therefore on the described route of a longer cycling loop; Liptovský Mikuláš is both the starting point and the return destination. Check the local signposting before setting off.

Seals and Local History

The Benickovci were the noble owners of Benice. Seal impressions from the second half of the 19th century have preserved the inscription “OBEC BENICE,” but not the seal’s image. The text and image have therefore been preserved in different ways: the text is legible, while the image cannot be made out from these impressions. The original seal matrix is held in the collections of the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok. A matrix is the stamp used to make a seal, so the stamping tool and an individual impression are two different objects.

One dated detail is an oval seal made in 1885, bearing the three-line Hungarian inscription: “LIPTÓ MEGYE BENICZ KŐZSÉG PECSÉTJE 1885.”

Coat of Arms Design and Flag

Benice’s coat of arms design is based on a variant of the Benickovci family’s coat of arms. It depicts a silver dove with outstretched wings standing on a gold crown and holding a green palm branch in its beak, all on a red shield. This identifies both the connection to the noble family and the specific composition of the design.

The flag has different distinguishing features: it has six horizontal stripes in the order red, white, red, green, white and yellow, an aspect ratio of 2:3, and a three-pointed end. Two cuts extend one third of the flag’s length. The comparison shows two distinct forms of local symbols: the composition of the coat of arms design and the flag’s sequence of stripes and shape of its end.

A Nature Theme in Liptovský Mikuláš

Another perspective is offered by the nature and landscape educational trail in Lesopark Háj-Nicovô, near Liptovský Mikuláš. It provides information about local nature and fossils from a time when Liptov was covered by a sea, up to 45 million years ago. Alongside Benice’s local history, this offers a separate focus on nature in Liptovský Mikuláš: here the subject is nature and geological history, rather than further traces of seals or coats of arms.
