Ľadonhora reaches 999 m; a marked ridge trail leads to viewpoints overlooking the Malá Fatra and the surrounding area. The mountain is also a protected nature reserve in Okres Kysucké Nové Mesto. Ochodnický prameň and Veľké Ostré are also natural monuments in the district. Alongside the sweeping views from the ridge, there are other protected natural sites to discover in their own right.
Radoľa: Architecture and Long Periods of History
Radoľa Castle is a Renaissance manor house, probably originally protected by a defensive wall. The castle houses the permanent archaeological and historical exhibition “The Early History of Kysuce”. It has been open there since 1983 and was partially redesigned in 2002. The exhibition features artefacts from the Palaeolithic to the Roman period. The architecture and exhibition offer different historical perspectives: the manor house defines the site, while the finds span much earlier periods.
Opened in 2014, the educational historical trail in Radoľa is approximately 4 km long. It passes places associated with the earliest settlement in the area. Signposts mark the route, and information panels explain the historical significance of each location. The route combines time outdoors with insights into the area's history, offering more than just a single view of the past.
At Koscelisko near Radoľa, the foundations of a masonry church that stood from approximately 1270 to 1429 were uncovered. The Koscelisko terrace also shows that people lived there 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. These traces of human history are separated by millennia: the terrace points to an early human presence, while the church foundations date from a much later period in the area's history.
Historic Centre and Living Traditions
The historic centre of Kysucké Nové Mesto is the only surviving historic complex in Kysuce. In the middle of the historic square, lined with arcades, stands a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1761. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary also tells the story of several building phases: it developed from a chapel begun in 1738, was extended from 1801 and completed in 1817. The square and church reveal different forms of historic heritage in the city centre.
Local traditions include the Jakubovské hody, which date back to 1666 and continue to this day. At the Vianočné trhy, refreshments such as punch or mead are offered to the public; dates and vendors may vary from year to year. Alongside the historic sites, events and seasonal offerings also form part of the city's cultural life.
Trails, Science and Winter Sports
If you would like to break your exploration of the Kysucká vrchovina into shorter sections, you can divide the route through the mountains. Each section can end in one of the neighbouring valleys. This offers a practical way to plan the route in stages rather than treating it as a single journey.
The Kysucká hvezdáreň, a regional cultural institution, offers a different perspective. Its work includes professional astronomical observation and events that introduce astronomy and related natural and technical sciences to a broad audience. In Horný Vadičov, Snowsun Vadičov ski centre offers skiing and night skiing. Facilities also include a children's park and a ski school; experienced instructors help beginners as well as those looking to improve their skiing technique. The range of interests therefore extends from astronomical education to winter activities.
