Rajec combines a clearly recognisable urban heritage with activities for a range of interests. The town hall, the Trinity Column, the Church of St Ladislaus and the Town Museum represent the architectural and historical side of the town. There is also a 26-kilometre cycling loop, an educational trail with information about nature and history, and Veronika Thermal Baths. The range of options is therefore not limited to a single way of sightseeing: you can focus your stay more on architecture, crafts, cycling, nature or bathing.
Squares, Buildings and Town History
The single-storey town hall stands in the middle of a square and can be accessed from all sides. The Trinity Column is in the south-western part of the almost square SNP Square; it was ceremonially erected in 1818. The town hall and column thus offer two different ways of looking at the town: the layout of a square and the historical date of a monument.
The distinctive tower of the Church of St Ladislaus shapes Rajec’s skyline. The church has been a national cultural monument since 1963.
The Town Museum is housed in a former brewery dating from the 17th century, which is listed as a national cultural monument. The building brings together its former use as a brewery and its current function as a museum, so the town’s history can be read not only in its squares and skyline but also in the use of a historic building. Rajec’s most significant traditional crafts included tanning, leatherworking and shoemaking. These terms refer to different kinds of work involving leather and complement the architectural perspective with a craft tradition. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current visitor information, as it may change. Tanning is the processing of hides into leather, leatherworking is working with this material, and shoemaking is the craft of making shoes—three distinct areas of Rajec’s craft tradition.
Cycling Loop, Educational Trail and Thermal Baths
The 26-kilometre, moderately difficult Okolo RajeckĂ˝ch TeplĂc a Rajca cycling loop passes through Rajec and over SNP Square. When planning, you can take both the distance and difficulty into account; these details help you assess the route as a cycling option.
The OkolĂm RajeckĂ©ho hradu educational trail begins in the centre and leads to a viewpoint. Information boards along the route provide information about local flora, fauna and history. While the cycling loop’s distance and moderate difficulty indicate its scope, the educational trail focuses on the viewpoint and nature and history. As conditions on the routes may change, check them before setting out.
Veronika Thermal Baths are located in Rajec. Seasonal opening arrangements may change; check the latest operating information before your visit.
