Lietavská Svinná-Babkov combines marked hiking trails with the rocky landscape of Súľovské skaly and nearby Lietava Castle. The castle rises above the entrance to the municipality. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a summit destination with an approximate hiking time, a route connecting several places, and cultural sights in the village and at the castle.

Hiking Trails and Rocky Landscape

A green-marked hiking trail leads from Rajecké Teplice via Skalky and Lietavská Svinná to Lietava Castle and onward toward Žilina. If you are looking for a route with several named stops, you can follow this connection. Another green-marked trail leads from Lietavská Svinná to the summit of Cibuľník. Allow about 45 minutes and 213 metres of elevation gain for the climb; the summit offers beautiful views. This time refers to the ascent to the summit, so allow extra time for the return journey. Trail conditions can change; check the route status before setting out.

The local tourist association maintains marked hiking trails. In the Krieš and Cibuľník areas, it has installed benches and tables that can serve as possible rest stops when hiking through these areas. The landscape can also be identified more precisely: the cadastral area of Lietavská Svinná-Babkov includes the Súľovské skaly and Skalky subunits of the Súľovské vrchy. Both are part of the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area.

The Súľovské skaly include named rock towers, rock needles, rock walls, rock windows and rock arches; there are around 50 named rock formations in total. The rocky landscape is popular with climbers. If you would rather cycle than walk, you can follow regional cycling route 5405 Lietavská Lúčka–Porúbka: it runs via Babkov to Lietavská Svinná.

Culture, History and Lietava Castle

Dom spomienok is a permanent exhibition of historical objects from Lietavská Svinná-Babkov. The collection includes furniture, work tools, clothing, documents and photographs, most of which come from the municipality. Visits are possible by appointment. If you plan to visit the exhibition, enquire in advance.

A local tradition tells of the bell in the bell tower of Svinná: it was originally at Lietava Castle and was later gifted to the settlement of Svinná. The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Lietavská Svinná dates from 1993. The village therefore has different historical points of reference side by side—from the story of the bell to a church built in more recent times.

Nearby Lietava Castle has a permanent exhibition on the castle’s history, archaeological finds and firearms. It has been expanded to include a tactile exhibition. The castle is also a destination on the green-marked hiking trail that leads from Rajecké Teplice via Lietavská Svinná. This links the history of the castle with a regional hiking route, while the climb to Cibuľník offers a single summit destination.

Events Throughout the Year

One of the local tourist association’s traditional annual events is “100 jarných kilometrov,” the opening of the hiking season in Žilina District at Lietava Castle. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific event date in advance.
