With Straník, Zástranie offers a clear point of reference for a stay between mountain scenery and local history. Straník is 769 m high, lies in the Kysucká vrchovina and is located 6 km east of Žilina. From the summit, there are views of the Little Fatra, the Žilina Valley and Kysuce. The mountain thus combines a specifically named ascent with views of three named landscape areas.

To Straník: on foot or by bike

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Zástranie to Straník. The ascent takes approximately 1.5 hours; the route follows uphill forest switchbacks. When planning your day, it is important to treat this time as an approximate duration for the ascent and to allow separately for the return journey and time at the summit.

For cycling plans, local cycling route 8458 is a specific point of comparison. It is marked in yellow, is 5.4 km long and is classified as an easy recreational MTB route. The Teplička–Zástranie–Straník route passes through Zástranie, then climbs to the summit of Straník and leads to the viewpoint. While an approximate ascent time is given for the hiking trail, the cycling route can be described by its length and classification; these details answer different planning questions. Check the route conditions before setting off, as they can change.

Architecture and archaeology on Straník

The tourist shelter and footbridge on Straník were officially opened on 9 April 2016 during the Žilinská 1000-ka event. That same year, both received the CE.ZA.AR Architecture Award from the Slovak Chamber of Architects in the Exterior Space category. Visitors interested in architecture will find a different way to experience Straník here than through its elevation and route.

The archaeological site of the Straník hillfort has been a registered cultural monument under protection since 30 December 1967. Finds from various areas include items from the Lusatian culture of the Middle to Late Bronze Age, as well as finds from the Middle to Late Iron Age. These include the Late La Tène period, known in northern Slovakia as the Púchov culture. This classification gives the site a clear connection to the region’s cultural history.

Local history and other activities

Zástranie is home to the Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, which was consecrated in 2000. Straník is also an important centre for paragliding and hang gliding today. The paragliding launch site is approximately 1 km east of the village of Zástranie.

The archaeological site of the Straník hillfort and the parish church in Zástranie offer different cultural connections: the hillfort is associated with archaeological finds and protected status, while the parish church is associated with its consecration in 2000. If you would like to include local history in your stay, you can distinguish between archaeological context and ecclesiastical history.
