Čičmany brings together architectural history, exhibitions, embroidery and seasonal activities. The cultural themes lead to specific houses and forms of dwelling, while the sporting activities include both a named mountain biking route and winter sports tied to the ski season. When planning, it is worth keeping these different highlights distinct.
Wooden Houses and the Heritage Conservation Reserve
The Čičmany Heritage Conservation Reserve comprises 136 houses. The ornamental decoration on the wooden houses developed from the practical protection of the wood with a lime coating. The designs are therefore not just patterns, but stem from a practical function of the coating. Radenov dom is the last surviving two-storey house in Čičmany and offers a specific point of reference for exploring the village’s architectural history.
Exhibitions at Radenov dom and House No. 42
The exhibition at Radenov dom covers many aspects of life in Čičmany: stages of life and customs, as well as work activities, occupations and livelihoods. It also addresses architecture, clothing and textiles. Those interested in everyday life will therefore find more here than just a presentation of houses.
House No. 42 offers a different, more narrowly focused view of domestic life. The exhibition features a diorama depicting the life of an extended family, typical of Čičmany up to the beginning of the 20th century. The house itself was built in 1913 as a home for four families who shared a stove and a table. The diorama’s historical setting and the building history of the house are two distinct points of reference. Check access to the exhibitions before your trip.
Embroidery from Čičmany
The textile tradition is also expressed through specific materials and motifs. Embroidery from Čičmany originally uses linen fabric. The patterns include geometrically stylised Renaissance motifs such as stars and squares, as well as animal motifs. This combination of material and varied motifs adds another cultural theme to the painted wooden houses, without conflating architectural design with handicrafts.
Mountain Biking Route and Geographic Points of Reference
A mountain biking route leads from Čičmany via Javorinka to the Sedlo Javorinky pass, then across to the other side of the mountain range as far as Čičermanské sedlo. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Another geographic point of reference is the summit of Strážov, where the cadastral areas of Čičmany, Zliechov and Pružina meet. The Strážov National Nature Reserve lies within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area.
Winter Sports During the Ski Season
For skiers and snowboarders, Čičmany offers six ski lifts, two marked cross-country ski trails and five downhill runs of varying difficulty. The offering therefore includes several winter sports and different levels of downhill runs. During the ski season, there is also a ski service, ski equipment rental, storage and a ski school. As these services are seasonal and the facilities’ operating status should be checked, it is advisable to confirm current availability before your trip.
