In the western part of the Žilina Basin, Bitarová lies in the valley of the Bitarovský potok. Three distinct aspects shape the way the place can be viewed: its open, hilly landscape, its seasonal connection with bird migration, and historical traces that date back well before its first written mention. Bitarová can therefore be understood in terms of its landscape and the time of year, as well as its cultural and historical connections.
Landscape and seasons
The municipality’s territory is almost entirely treeless and hilly. Marshy hollows lie between low ridges, with small areas of woodland in the southwest and northeast. The landscape’s character is therefore shaped not by a single natural feature, but by the interplay of open ridges, damp depressions and limited patches of woodland. If the landscape is an important factor in choosing a destination, these landforms offer a concrete point of reference.
In spring and autumn, a bird migration route passes through Bitarová. This gives its natural setting a seasonal aspect, while the description of the hills and hollows concerns the landscape’s enduring character. Possible sightings vary. For nature enthusiasts, the season is therefore a useful factor when deciding when to visit Bitarová: the landforms shape the place regardless of the season, while bird migration adds a seasonal accent.
A tour through Bitarová
The moderately difficult “Za krásami Súľova” tour offers a specific way to experience Bitarová as one section of a longer route. It is 27 kilometres long and runs from Žilina via Bitarová, Peklina, Rôsoviny pod Roháčom, Hričovské Podhradie, Ovčiarsko and Hradisko, before returning to Žilina. The route thus connects several named places and ends back in Žilina.
Two turns are described to help you find your way along the Bitarová section. At the beginning of Bitarová, the route turns off the main road behind the village sign. At the junction by the municipal office, shortly before the chapel, it turns left again. These directions help you follow the route through the village. For your own planning, the distance and difficulty level are useful points of reference; check the surface and access conditions before setting out.
Historical traces
Bitarová was first mentioned as a municipality in 1393. However, settlement in the municipal area dates back further: during the Late Bronze Age, a settlement of the Lusatian and Púchov cultures was located there. The municipal area also contains a Slovak burial ground with barrows dating from the Great Moravian period. These connections represent different periods, from the Bronze Age through the Great Moravian era to the first written mention in the Middle Ages.
The rural economy of the past is also part of the village’s history. In the 17th century, Bitarová had carp ponds where people also fished. Beekeeping and sheep farming were also part of the historical economy. The carp ponds and fishing are a specific link to the landscape and economic history of the 17th century; beekeeping and sheep farming add other traditional activities to the picture.
Cultural connections
The Church of Saint Augustine in Bitarová is associated with the year 1992. A municipal entry from 2020 reports a decision to revive the old custom of burning the Jánska vatra bonfire. If you would like to include a celebration in your travel plans, check locally whether it is taking place and when.
