Svätý Kríž combines a distinctive history of churches and architecture with a craft tradition for which the place was still known in the mid-20th century. A named MTB loop also passes through the area, while another route leads to Svätý Kríž. If you are weighing up a place to stay with cultural and cycling attractions, these local features offer concrete points to consider when making your choice.

Architectural history in manor house and churches

The Neoclassical Kúria Rudolfa Turanského manor house dates from the first half of the 19th century. It makes its own impression alongside the local churches: here, the focus is on a manor house with Neoclassical features, while the churches showcase different architectural histories and details of their furnishings.

The Evangelical Articular Church of Svätý Kríž is one of the largest wooden structures in Central Europe. The “Vlkolínec – Pribylina” route also leads to nearby Svätý Kríž, where this Articular wooden church is located. The place is therefore not only named as a destination on a cycling route, but is also associated with an outstanding wooden structure.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross tells another story of the area’s architecture. It is Neoclassical and was remodelled in 1819; parts of the masonry from an earlier Gothic church, which had been destroyed at the beginning of the 18th century, were used in the work. Inside is a Neo-Gothic copy of the main altar from Kežmarok. The remodelling and the older predecessor church make different layers of the area’s architectural history tangible here.

Settlement layout and crafts

Alongside individual buildings, the settlement’s layout also shapes the appearance of Svätý Kríž: the village has a linear structure along a stream. This shifts the focus from individual historic buildings to the spatial character of the village itself. The manor house, churches and settlement layout thus offer different perspectives on local character.

The historic craft tradition includes two different activities. Even in the mid-20th century, Svätý Kríž was known for making shepherds’ utensils and weaving rag rugs. Together, these details add a craft dimension to the local history alongside its architecture, ranging from items used by shepherds to textile work. For travellers who want to explore historic places through more than just their buildings, this is another concrete aspect to consider.

Plan cycling routes and your journey

The “Around Liptovska Mara” MTB loop passes through Svätý Kríž. It is 58 kilometres long, has a difficulty rating of 4 and takes eight hours. The route is mainly suited to mountain bikes and e-bikes. At eight hours, it should be planned as a longer standalone ride, rather than a short addition between other activities.

The route includes lightly trafficked second- and third-class roads, as well as paved and unpaved country roads. As traffic and surface conditions can change, check current route conditions before setting off. The stated route type and duration give you concrete values for planning, without having to treat the loop as equivalent to a shorter or differently described ride.

A small car park is located a few metres from the Evangelical Articular Church. As parking conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current situation before travelling. Svätý Kríž also has a direct bus connection to Liptovský Mikuláš. Check the timetable before travelling so you can factor the connection into your plans.
