Turzovka lies in the Kysuca River basin. In the town centre, a bronze monument commemorates the traditional wireworking craft; paths lead to Živčáková, and Turzovka has a sports complex with a year-round playing field and additional summer activities. Culture, a pilgrimage site and outdoor activities offer different focal points for planning your trip.

Crafts, Churches and Folklore

Turzovka is one of the centres of traditional wireworking. In the town centre, the bronze monument “Drotár a džarek” by Miroslav Cipár commemorates this tradition. Its name, material and location give the craft heritage a tangible connection to the town. If you are interested in regional culture, the churches and folklore events offer another way to explore Turzovka’s history.

The Roman Catholic Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dates from 1759 and is listed as a national cultural monument. It is distinct from the Church of Panny Márie Matky Cirkvi on Živčáková, which has been part of the pilgrimage site since 2015. It was solemnly consecrated on 4 October. Bishops from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, as well as around 15,000 pilgrims, attended the consecration.

Turzovka and Živčáková therefore represent different religious connections: here, a Baroque church with a specific date; there, a church that has been part of a pilgrimage site since 2015. If you are interested in architectural history, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a clearly dated landmark; the church on Živčáková is associated with the pilgrimage tradition.

The Beskydské slávnosti folklore festival is also held in Turzovka and has been running for more than five decades. Its 53rd edition was described as one of the region’s most significant folklore events. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your stay. For 23 years, the Turzovanka folklore group has preserved the songs and customs of Veľká Turzovka and Kysuce, broadening the view of regional culture beyond individual buildings and events.

Paths to Živčáková

Živčáková is part of the Turzovská vrchovina and lies on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Turzovka, Korňa and Vysoká nad Kysucou. From Turzovka, two footpaths lead uphill: one starts in Vyšný koniec, the other in Závodie. The ascent from Turzovka or Korňa takes about an hour. The approximate duration and the two named starting areas offer different points of reference for planning your route.

For travel by car, an improved access road leads from Korňa to Živčáková. Parking is available near the Church of Panny Márie Matky Cirkvi. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between footpaths from two named starting areas in Turzovka and the described access road from Korňa.

Sports Activities by Season

The Areál športu a oddychu in Turzovka-Závodie has a year-round, 42 × 22-metre multipurpose playing field covered by an air-supported dome. The sports listed are handball, volleyball, nohejbal, mini-football and tennis. Its dimensions and covered playing surface make the complex a practical option for various ball sports.

In the summer months, the complex also offers pétanque, Russian skittles, tennis on clay courts, badminton, mini golf, and rides on scooters or quad bikes. The availability of individual activities may vary. The seasonal distinction is useful when planning your trip: the playing field is available year-round, while the other listed activities are offered during the summer months.
