Krná lies in the southern part of the Veporské Slovenské rudohorie mountain region, in the valley of the Krná stream. You can plan a trip from two perspectives: hikes around Jasenina, and architectural and local history. The landscape is part of the picture, too: in 2010, more than 59 percent of the cadastral area was forested, and deciduous forests grow in the surrounding area. This sets trails and nature alongside a number of specific historic sites and dates.

Hiking around Jasenina

Jasenina is a clear landmark for hiking. The recommended route from Krná to Jasenina starts at the bus stop in Krná. A marked red hiking trail on the Málinec–Kokava nad Rimavicou route also passes the observation tower on Jasenina. The ascent of Jasenina takes place every year. The information points to different starting points: the recommended route starts in Krná, while the marked trail passes the observation tower.

Manor house, church and local history

The first written mention of Krná dates back to 1435. The village’s oldest monument is a Neoclassical manor house dating from 1820, built on the site of a Renaissance manor house from the 17th century. These dates refer to different historical points: 1435 is the first written mention, and 1820 is the year the manor house was built. Since 1960, the manor house has served the municipality as a cultural centre. If you would like to see inside, check access locally.

The Evangelical church was solemnly consecrated on 22 October 1905 and built without a tower. According to the municipal description, it was the only church of its kind in the Evangelical A. C. church district of Uhorské. An altarpiece by Ľudovít Kubányi was acquired for the Evangelical church. A separate bell tower with two bells was added in Krná in 1912. The Krná–Závada bell tower was built in 1893 by residents of Krná’s scattered settlements. The manufacture of wooden wheels is also part of the village’s history: it was once widespread and practised in as many as 14 households.

Landscape and local features

Traditional folk architecture has been preserved in the parts of the village known as Neklen, Závada, Osičiny and Nový svet. Krná also has a chestnut grove with around 20 sweet chestnut trees; one of them has a trunk circumference of 305 centimetres. The adder is also found in Krná’s scattered settlements. Together with the deciduous forests and the high proportion of the cadastral area covered by forest, these details give a concrete impression of the landscape around the village.

Travel details and accommodation

When looking for a holiday apartment in Krná, one question can help you plan ahead: should the annual ascent of Jasenina determine your travel dates, or is architectural and local history your main interest? If the ascent is important to your plans, ask locally for the date. Krná is accessible by bus; check the timetable for your arrival and departure days. This will help you match your chosen focus to your travel dates.
