Twelve educational stops give the Náučný chodník Ipeľ a special focus: information panels highlight the surrounding nature and landscape. A shorter section can be reached from Línia, where ample parking is available. As parking conditions can change, check them before setting out. This makes the educational trail a clear way to explore the area’s natural features.

Trails, landscapes and different route details

The Málinec–Jasenina hiking trail is 9.5 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 3 hours and 5 minutes. The northern summit area of Jasenina has been protected since 1990, covering 3.21 hectares, to protect the round-leaved sundew and other endangered and protected plant species. From Sedlo Prieraz, you can enjoy a view of the Málinec Reservoir. The route, protected area and viewpoint each offer a different perspective on the landscape.

The Lučenec–Poltár–Málinec cycling educational trail has different details: it is 36 kilometres long and has ten stops. Its focus is on natural sciences and cultural history, and it is also connected to marked hiking trails. While a walking time is given for the Málinec–Jasenina hiking trail, the cycling trail is described by its length and number of stops. Check local conditions before setting off on it.

Glass, crafts and layers of history

The Most cestný v Zelenom bridge is a technical monument. It is protected as a technical cultural heritage site and is considered the third-oldest surviving bridge of its kind in Slovakia. Churches also tell stories of different architectural styles and periods: the Evangelical church in Poltár dates from 1791. Its walls incorporate architectural elements from the 15th century. This building thus brings together two distinct periods.

The Evangelical church in České Brezovo was consecrated by Bishop Samuel Zoch on 15 October 1922 and built to a design by M. M. Harminc. The Evangelical church in Zelené dates from 1835. Together, these examples show the range of historical reference points in the district.

Glass and ceramics lead to further cultural discoveries. Katarínska Huta and Poltár have permanent glass art exhibitions associated with the region of Novohrad’s almost 600-year glassmaking history. You can check the details of the current displays on site. The pottery tradition in Hrnčiarske Zalužany is represented by the Šamotka cooperative and private craftspeople.

In Cinobaňa, the Jarčanisko–Strieborná archaeological complex adds another perspective on the past. Several stops illustrate the development of the Bronze Age Kyjatice culture, alongside an interactive 3D model. As individual facilities may change, check which features are currently accessible before your visit.

Nature and special experiences

The Kokava-Línia tourist area is located in the western Slovenské rudohorie. Kúpna Baňa offers a different natural highlight: the area is protected and is home to rare plants and animals. Check the local access rules there. Protected plants can be found at Poltársky rybník. The protected areas and the Ipeľ educational trail thus showcase different aspects of nature in Poltár District.

Other options include the unusual bathing area in Hrnčiarske Zalužany, with six travertine pools and a water temperature of 20 °C. Check current bathing availability before visiting. Ranč Megi Prievrana offers horse riding; if you plan this activity, it is advisable to check the current booking arrangements in advance.
