The characteristic landscape complexes of Putna-Vrancea Nature Park are protected, while the park also offers opportunities for recreation and tourism. It covers 38,204 hectares, equivalent to 41.32 percent of Vrancea County’s mountainous area. This gives an idea of the natural environment that shapes Vrancea. Waterfalls, peat bog habitats and geological phenomena each add their own character.

A waterfall, a high-altitude peat bog and geological forces

Cascada Putnei is a nationally protected area in Vrancea County, within the administrative territory of Tulnici commune, near the village of Lepșa. The waterfall is 76 metres long and descends 14 metres; its water collects in a lake about 12 metres deep. As a sustainable management area, Cascada Putnei is one of the places where visitors should stay within the designated area and follow the information signs.

Lacul Negru is centred on a different habitat: the lake includes an active peat bog complex with sundews, salamanders and newts. It lies in the Năruja Basin at an altitude of 1,250 metres, covers more than one hectare and reaches a maximum depth of 7.5 metres. The natural features are therefore quite distinct: at Cascada Putnei, the waterfall and lake shape the description; at Lacul Negru, it is the high altitude and peat bog habitat.

At the Focul Viu protected area, visitors can observe a geological phenomenon: natural gas rises through cracks in the Earth’s crust and ignites into flames 30 to 50 centimetres high. Rather than a watercourse or habitat, the gas escaping and the resulting flames make this place a distinctive discovery in Vrancea.

Trails and practical directions

The European long-distance trail E8 runs for 67 kilometres through the Vrancea Mountains. A shorter, clearly defined route passes through the Cheile Tișiței Nature Reserve: it runs seven kilometres upstream through the protected area and is one of the main tourist attractions in the Vrancea Mountains. The entrance is signposted from the DN2D between Focșani and Târgu Secuiesc; from there, access is via about 1.3 kilometres of gravel road. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

The marked trail to Lacul Negru follows the DJ205D and then continues for about 16 kilometres along a forest road beside the Năruja Valley. Allow approximately eight to ten hours for the round trip. The forest road may be impassable at certain times, so check conditions in advance. The information about the trail length and estimated time helps you plan this visit as a separate activity.

Culture, remembrance and wine

The exhibition at the Muzeul Țării Vrancei in Vidra comprises five rooms featuring traditional carpets from the Putna, Zăbala and Năruja valleys, as well as folk costumes from Vrancea. The carpets’ origins in three valleys and the region’s traditional costumes give the museum visit a distinct cultural focus.

The Mărășești Mausoleum holds the remains of 5,073 soldiers and officers in 154 individual crypts and nine communal crypts. The precise figures and arrangement of the crypts convey the scale of the memorial.

Another link to the region is the Drumul Vinului Vrancea. Its main route runs from Focșani via Odobești and Tifești to Panciu. At Crama Pandora, a guided cellar tour covers the winemaking process from grape to bottle, the wine cellar, the technologies used and the terroir of Cotești. The wine tasting includes three wines from the SECRETS range: Șarbă, Rose and Fetească Neagră. Booking details may change; check the current offer in advance.

Local food and baths

Punct Gastronomic Local „La Moise“ serves freshly prepared home-style food daily as a set menu, including vegetables from its own garden. Check availability before travelling. Stațiunea Vizantea offers baths in tubs, galvanic baths, treatments using modern equipment, therapeutic or relaxing massages, and swimming pools. As services and availability can change, it is a good idea to check what is offered in advance.
