Valeni brings together several periods: the 1811 wooden church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului,” newer churches and archaeological traces of earlier settlements. Visitors planning a stay around cultural themes can explore both church architecture and settlement history. Road connections and Lake Solești add regional orientation and another activity to the local highlights.

Church architecture across several centuries

The wooden church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” was built in 1811 from wooden beams on a stone foundation and is designated a historic monument. It was endowed or founded by villagers with the support of Gavriil Macedon, Gheorghe Arsenie and Aga Scarlat Donici, along with their wives. The church has a wooden bell tower with two bells cast in 1882. In 1885, the church was renovated inside and out.

The old cemetery is also part of the church’s history. A stone cross dating from 1812 is considered the oldest stone cross there. Together with the wooden beams, stone foundation and bells, these details tell of different aspects of the building’s history, without reducing it to a single construction date.

The newer parish church in Valeni was built of brick between 1920 and 1923. After major repairs from 1992 to 1995, it was reconsecrated on August 16, 1995. The Orthodox church of Văleni II Parish is another building: it was built in 2021 and is dedicated to the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nectarios. Compared with the wooden church, the newer parish church uses a different building material; the 2021 church marks a much later period.

Archaeological traces of earlier settlements

The archaeological finds date back further than the churches. Remains of Neolithic settlements of the Cucuteni culture have been discovered in Valeni. Traces of Bronze Age settlements attributed to the Noua culture have also been found. Discoveries also include a fortified Carpic settlement dating from the 2nd to 3rd century, with features such as an earth rampart, palisade and ditch. The sequence from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age to the first centuries AD offers a different perspective on local history from that of the surviving churches.

Cultural highlights in the village

The 26th edition of the “Eminescu prin mileniul III” competition festival was organized in Valeni. The festival aims to introduce children to literature, art and the values of cultural identity. It is regarded as a cultural and educational tradition of the local community and beyond. An obelisk commemorating the heroes who fell in the Second World War also stands in front of the town hall.

The place name also bears a trace of history: the settlement was formerly called Valea Rea and has been known as Văleni since 1965. At the commune level, Văleni lies on two gently sloping hills covered with acacia trees and fruit trees. This description of the landscape refers to the commune, not just the village itself.

Regional excursion and directions

Nearby is Lake Solești, a 348-hectare reservoir on the Vasluieț River in Solești Commune. Fish caught there include carp, crucian carp, pike-perch and perch. The route to the lake runs from Vaslui through Moara Domnească and Văleni, then on to Solești and Satu Nou. This means Valeni’s church and settlement history and fishing at the regional lake appeal to different travel interests.

For getting around: local road DC3A starts in Văleni at DN 24 and heads west to DJ 246A; about 2.5 kilometers of it are paved within the village. At the commune level, Văleni lies on national road DN 24, along the route between Vaslui and Iași. DN 24 crosses the commune from north to south and is paved along its entire stretch within the commune.
