Obârşia Lotrului is a tourist complex in the Lotru Valley, where the Latoriței, Parâng and Șureanu Mountains meet. The mountain setting offers several highlights to help you plan your trip: a monastery church, marked hiking trails, a ski resort and mountain biking routes. The road connection via the Transalpina adds a seasonal option to this selection.
Road connections and routes
From Obârşia Lotrului, you can reach the Transalpina. During the warmer months, you can continue along this road to Rânca. It also leads to Petroșani. There is also a hiking route to Petroșani starting from Cabana Obârşia Lotrului: its trailhead is on the alpine road towards Mount Tărtărău. The road journey and hiking route therefore lead to the same stated destination, but have different starting points and conditions.
A monastery church in the mountains
The “Sfinții Martiri Brâncoveni” Monastery is located at about 1,400 metres on DN7A in the mountain resort of Obârşia Lotrului. Its wooden church is built in the Maramureș style, which is typical of the area around Borșa. It also has the shape of a Byzantine cross. These distinctive architectural features give your trip a cultural point of interest alongside the mountain scenery and trails.
Nature reserve and hiking destinations
The Miru-Bora Nature Reserve lies near Obârşia Lotrului. It is a mixed protected area in IUCN Category IV, of national importance, and part of the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0188 Parâng. Its landscape features include dense stands of mountain pine, clusters of alpine roses and alpine meadows.
A tourist trail leads from Obârşia Lotrului over Mount Miru to Stâna Miru; it is marked with a blue dot. Another important hiking route leads to Lacul Gâlcescu and continues to the mountain ridge, where it joins a trail marked with a red stripe. For specific trip planning, it is advisable to check current trail conditions in advance.
High-altitude activities for skiing and mountain biking
The Transalpina ski area starts at an elevation of 1,350 metres. The gondola takes you to about 1,800 metres; a ski lift then ascends to 2,000 metres at Vârful Bora. The elevation figures therefore refer to two consecutive facilities: the gondola and the ski lift.
The Domeniul Transalpina has easy and difficult mountain biking trails across the alpine pasture. They connect to the strategic trail or the Transalpina. The gondola makes it easier to ascend and reach the starting points of various trails. This lets you distinguish between hiking destinations, the ski area's high-altitude facilities and mountain biking, without combining the different activities into a single circuit.
Summer views of Lake Vidra
A report dated 18 August 2025 describes Lake Vidra near Obârşia Lotrului as a summer recreation destination for visitors arriving with caravans or tents. This time-specific description adds another seasonal highlight alongside the mountain trails and high-altitude activities. It refers to the summer use described in the report.
