Ciungetu brings together an Orthodox wooden church dating from 1861 and a cave with fossils and pottery fragments, alongside trails through the landscapes of the Latorița. This brings local history, archaeological finds and nature together in one trip plan. To choose your accommodation, start with a clear question: would you primarily like to explore the history of the village and Peștera Laptelui, or focus more on the trails and landscapes described here?

Church and Cave: History and Finds

The Orthodox wooden Church of Saints Constantine and Helena was built in 1861 and is listed under the official LMI code VL-II-m-B-09722. Its votive painting also tells the story of the church’s origins: it depicts the main benefactor, Florea Ionescu, with his family, as well as villagers who helped build it. This connects the year to specific people and the contribution of the village community.

Peștera Laptelui, also known as Peștera cu Lapte, is in the village of Ciungetu on the right-hand slope of the Rudăreasa. Fossils of small animals that lived more than 50,000 years ago have been found in the cave, as well as pottery fragments from the Glina culture. Paleontological and historical finds are therefore found side by side, though they need not belong to the same period. The gallery is 22 metres long and ends at a small pool of water. The cave is of interest primarily from a paleontological and historical perspective; its physical description and its finds offer different points of reference.

Waterfalls and Protected Landscapes

The landscape extends beyond the history of the village. Cascada Moara Dracilor in the Latorița Mountains is a two-tiered waterfall with a drop of 20 to 25 metres. At the Muntinu Nature Reserve, by contrast, the focus is on plant life and landforms: the protected area preserves rare plants on limestone rocks with granitic intrusions. Its landscape also includes a glacial valley and two lakes in the upper reaches. This makes it possible to distinguish the botanical and landscape features from the waterfall’s striking form.

From Ciungetu, a route follows the Valea Latoriței upstream. The trail to Cascada Scoruș passes through the canyon of the Bucureasa Valley and is marked with red-and-white circles. Boardwalks and narrow paths characterize this route. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as conditions can change.

Routes and Planning

Road descriptions also vary in route and surface. The road to Barajul Petrimanu begins 18 kilometres from Ciunget and climbs through the Latorița area. The route from Gura Latoriței via Ciunget, Lacul Petrimanu and Lacul Galbenu is partly paved. From the Petrimanu Dam towards Galbenu, the described section starts with 4.5 kilometres of a gentle climb and small hairpin bends; after that, the ascent becomes steeper. Markings, surface and the sequence of gradients are useful planning details, but each refers to different roads and sections. Check current road conditions before travelling.

The route over Pasul Curmătura Oltețului connects to Cheile Oltețului and continues to Peştera Muierii and Polovragi. Another technical feature is the Lotru-Ciunget Hydroelectric Power Plant, with an installed capacity of 510 MW. This offers a different perspective on the area than the wooden church, cave finds or nature reserve.

When planning your overnight stay, you can weigh the themes according to your interests: local history and finds on the one hand, landscapes and routes on the other. If you are looking for hotels in Ciungetu, start by asking which of these aspects of the destination you would like to shape your stay.
