Arutela Fort in Poiana Bivolari near Păușa is located within Călimănești and dates to 137–138 AD. It adds a Roman touch to a destination whose themes also include monastery and spa history, as well as the landscape along the Olt and in the Cozia Massif. The different construction periods and locations give a stay several cultural and scenic focal points.

Roman Heritage and Monastery History

Arutela is a Category A monument. The fort was part of a defensive line and protected traffic through the Olt Valley towards Transylvania. Its history is therefore connected to the valley’s role as a transport route; the Roman connection here extends beyond the site itself.

Cozia Monastery is also a Category A monument. It is located in the Cozia–Căciulata locality within Călimănești and dates to 1388–1391. Inside, the monastery preserves Byzantine murals of inestimable value to Romanian and European cultural and artistic heritage. The construction period and the art collection complement one another, but are distinct aspects of the monastery’s history.

Ostrov Monastery is located on Ostrov Island in the Olt and dates from 1520–1522. Its interiors preserve murals from 1760. The dates mark two clearly distinct periods: they place the monastery in the early 16th century and the surviving paintings in a later period.

At the foot of Mount Cozia and not far from the Olt lies Turnu Monastery, a monastery of monks. It is 600 m from the railway station of the same name. Around the Turneanu Ridge in the Cozia Massif, some hermitages and cells carved into the rock have survived to this day. The monastery, hermitages and rock-cut cells give this place its own monastic and scenic character.

Spa History and Historic Buildings

The history of the spa resort is also reflected in its architecture. Călimănești’s central spa establishment was built in 1881–1886. After its renovation in 1911–1912, the building was known as the spa resort’s central pavilion, the so-called Pavilionul Central. The two periods mark the original construction and subsequent renovation; together, they offer a concrete glimpse into the town’s spa history.

Another historic building is Călimănești railway station, completed in 1899. It is considered a notable building that recalls the railway station in Sinaia. Alongside the spa architecture, it is a building connected to railway history. The completion date describes the building’s history, while its characterization as a notable building highlights the architectural comparison with Sinaia.

The Olt Landscape and Cozia National Park

The Călimănești-Căciulata spa resort lies at the entrance to the Olt Gorge and borders the Cozia Massif. Within the administrative area of the city of Călimănești, the Olt forms the most spectacular section of the Turnu Roșu–Câineni gorge. The landscape is shaped both by the river and gorge and by the neighboring massif.

Cozia National Park is a protected area with scenic, geological and geomorphological, floristic, faunal and forestry values. This range encompasses more than a single perspective on the landscape: in addition to landforms, the park’s stated focal points include plant and animal life, as well as forest values.

Mountain hiking, scientific tourism, extreme sports, recreation and leisure activities are possible forms of tourism in Cozia National Park. The options range from mountain activities to recreation and leisure. Forestry roads and marked and unmarked hiking trails run along the Păușa stream, offering ways to access higher mountain areas. When finding your way, the distinction between marked and unmarked trails is a specific point travelers can take into account.

For planning purposes, the themes can be considered separately: Arutela represents Roman defensive history, Cozia and Ostrov represent monasteries and murals, and the historic buildings represent spa and railway history. The Olt, the gorge, the Cozia Massif and the national park offer a different perspective on the landscape. You can choose which of these focal points will shape your stay based on your interests.
