The Otetelișanu Manor House, churches, and the Olteț River offer different perspectives on Bălcești. When planning your stay, it is worth considering architectural history, biographies, and geographical orientation separately: the historical landmarks are not all in one place, while the Olteț runs through the town. This lets you choose the cultural focus of your stay based on specific names and themes.

The manor house and Petrache Poenaru

The Otetelișanu Manor House was built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its architecture combines elements of cula buildings and the Brâncovenesc style. The construction period and stylistic influences offer two ways to put it in context: the house belongs to a clearly defined historical period and combines two architectural influences. Petrache Poenaru was born in 1799 at the Otetelișanu estate in Benești. He was a Romanian educator, teacher, engineer, and mathematician, a member of the Romanian Academy, and the inventor of the reservoir pen, the forerunner of the fountain pen. The manor house’s architectural history and Poenaru’s biography thus sit side by side. If you are particularly interested in architecture, the combination of stylistic influences offers an entry point; those following biographical connections will find a second, distinct perspective in Poenaru.

Churches with stories of their own

The churches can also be distinguished by location, origins, and function. In Benești, which belongs to the town of Bălcești, the “Sfinții Voievozi” Church is near the Otetelișanu Manor House. It is a historic monument and was designed as a court church and chapel for the boyar estate. Its proximity to the manor house and its historical function offer different points of reference for understanding it. In the village of Otetelișu, which belongs to Bălcești, the “Sfinții Voievozi” Church was founded in 1774 by Clucer Șerban Otetelișanu. In Irimești, Badea Albulescu and Radu Nicolaescu founded the “Sfântul Nicolae” Church in 1884. The dates mark foundations in two different places and allow for a brief chronological comparison. You can distinguish the churches by location, function, founder, and date, rather than conflating their individual histories.

River, road, and fair

The Olteț provides a specific north–south reference point for geographical orientation: the river runs through Bălcești from north to south for 21.5 kilometers. National Road DN 65C runs through the town for a distance of seven kilometers. The river and the road are therefore two distinct, clearly quantified reference points for placing the town in context alongside its historical themes. The river runs for about three times the length of the road through the town.

A 2019 calendar from Vâlcea County Council lists July 20 as the date of the “Bâlci de Sfântul Ilie” fair in Bălcești. If you are considering traveling for the fair, check the date for your intended travel year.
