Church history, a house museum and a 20-kilometre cycling route offer different ways to explore Bucovăț Commune. The route passes through Bucovăț to Bazoșu Nou Dendrological Park; cultural history and botanical collections each add their own character. When planning where to stay, it is worth first considering whether you want to focus on Bucovăț, the landscape or the cycling route.

Landscape between the Bega and Timiș

Bucovăț Commune lies in a quiet plain landscape on the Bega and near Timișoara. The Bazoș Arboretum offers a specific connection to nature and plants: it covers 62 hectares and lies at the transition between the Bega and Timiș floodplains, on a flat alluvial plain. Here, an expansive river landscape meets a large collection of woody plants.

The arboretum comprises 776 woody plant taxa in collections from North America and Asia. With 19 species, it has Romania’s largest oak collection. The first landscaping work took place from 1909 to 1914 on the initiative of the then owner, Count Ludovic Ambrosie. The historic grounds can thus also be understood in terms of when they were created; today’s plant collections offer a different perspective on the site than the history of its design.

Church and everyday history in Bucovăț

The church’s history also reaches far back: in 1790, the church in Bucovăț purchased liturgical books printed in Blaj (Ardeal). Today’s Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe has its own construction history. Work began on 20 July 1935 and was completed by Christmas of that year. The current towers were added between 1989 and 1993 by parish priest Ioan Drăgan.

Casa Memorială a Comunei Bucovăț offers another perspective on life in the past. It preserves original furniture, tools and clothing, and conveys what an ordinary household in the Banat plain was like. Livestock farming and beekeeping were among Bucovăț’s former occupations. These subjects complement one another: the museum focuses on the household, while the recorded occupations place historical daily life in context beyond the individual home. If you are planning a visit, please check current opening arrangements in advance.

Cycling route and orientation

Eco Timiș Cycling Route 4, which is 20 kilometres long, passes through Bucovăț to Bazoșu Nou Dendrological Park. It thus connects Bucovăț with a specific destination, though the distance alone does not indicate a travel time or level of difficulty. For orientation, the distance between Bucovăț and Bazoșu Nou along DJ 609F is 3.6 kilometres. This figure refers to the two localities.

The arboretum is also accessible via Remetea Mare railway station, six kilometres away, as well as National Road 6 and the Remetea Mare–Bucovăț–Bazoșu Nou county road. If you are considering travelling by train, check the current timetable; the distance to the station is not a timetable or a promise that a service is available. The distances given can help you organise your trip, but do not replace checking the conditions for your travel dates.

Plan your overnight stay and visit

Casa Celia is listed as a place to stay, eat and hold events. Before booking, check whether it is available for your travel dates.

The date given for the Ruga in Bucovăț is 23 April. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the programme for your travel year before making plans. This keeps the event as a possible reason to visit without assuming it takes place every year or that a particular programme will be offered.
