The 500-metre-long colonnade, a folk art exhibition in the childhood home of the woman it is named after, and a 20-hectare dendrological park showcase three distinctive facets of Buziaș. The town also has a spa history dating back to its first recognition in 1839. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes separate: spa tradition, architectural and collection history are found in the town, while the Wine Road extends across the wider region.
Spa tradition and mineral water
Buziaș was recognised as a spa resort in 1839 and officially as a balneoclimatic resort in 1911. At the resort, carbonated mineral water is used for external treatments in the form of heated mineral water baths, and for internal use at the drinking fountains in the park. Since April 2022, the resort has had a renovated SPA centre with a semi-Olympic swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna and artificial salt cave. If these facilities are important to your plans, check their availability before travelling.
The Buziaș Colonnade
The Buziaș Colonnade is a 500-metre-long wooden structure in the Byzantine architectural style and is considered unique in Europe. It was built in 1875 at the request of Emperor Franz Joseph. It connects the Josif Spring, Phoenix Hotel, the bazaar, the Mihai Spring and the casino. The structure is notable both for its architecture and for its direct connection to five named places.
Folk art and collection history
The “Iuliana Folea Troceanu” folk art exhibition is housed in the childhood home of the artist and collector it is named after. It contains 900 museum objects, including traditional garments and textiles. These garments and textiles originate from the Buziaș area and other places in Banat, and date from 1860 to 1925. The collection thus brings together a personal connection to its namesake and the regional, historically identifiable origins of the textiles.
Park and festival
The Buziaș dendrological park covers 20 hectares and is home to many tree species; the most widespread is the plane tree. Its variety of trees gives it a different focus from the colonnade and exhibition: here, the emphasis is on tree species rather than architecture or a textile collection. The park is also associated with the annual Festivalul Veverițelor. The festival is organised by the town hall and the Buziaș Region Development Association. If you would like to include the festival in your plans, check the dates for the edition you wish to attend.
The Wine Road and its regional setting
The Wine Road initially focused on the Silagiu–Buziaș area; it was later extended beyond this area. In the region around Buziaș, it includes tastings, vineyard tours and visits to local producers. This wider reach is useful when planning your trip: the Wine Road covers a broader region than Buziaș’s architecture, collection and park attractions.
A 46-kilometre route
The Buziaș–Nițchidorf–Buziaș route starts in the spa resort of Buziaș and returns via Vucova, Chevereșu Mare and Bacova. It is 46 kilometres long. The distance indicates the route length, while the named places specify the return journey. If you include this route in your plans, check its conditions locally before setting off.
