Cheile Lucavei, the Tinovul Găina-Lucina bog and Herghelia Lucina show different sides of Moldova-Sulița: protected landscapes, high-altitude terrain and cultural history. When choosing a hotel in Moldova-Sulița, you can first decide what you want to focus on: is nature your priority, are you interested in a cycling route, or would you like to discover churches and Huțul traditions? Each place and route has its own geographic context; taking a closer look can help you connect your interests with your travel plans.

Protected areas and natural attractions

Cheile Lucavei is in the area of the commune of Moldova-Sulița, on the road towards Lucina. The 33-hectare area is designated as a geological and morphological reserve. It protects rare plants, including bearberry and edelweiss.

The Tinovul Găina-Lucina bog lies within the administrative area of the commune of Moldova-Sulița, in Suceava County, at an altitude of 1,165 metres above sea level. It is part of the ROSCI0086 Găina-Lucina Natura 2000 protected area. These natural attractions have different points of interest: for Cheile Lucavei, the protected-area classification and rare plants stand out; for Tinovul Găina-Lucina, the bog setting, altitude and Natura 2000 designation are notable.

Tourist and educational activities are permitted in the Răchitișul Mare nature reserve, provided you follow the applicable visitor rules. Access is via European route E576 and DJ175 to the village of Benea in the commune of Moldova-Sulița, then a further two kilometres. Road-surface conditions may vary.

Distinguish the cycling route from the access road

The Cârlibaba–Moldova-Sulița cycling loop first reaches the Cheile Lucavei nature reserve and then, after a further two kilometres, leads to the main road in the centre of the commune of Moldova-Sulița. The two additional two-kilometre stretches are part of different routes: one follows the access road through Benea to Răchitișul Mare, while the other runs along the cycling loop from Cheile Lucavei to the main road in the commune centre. Check road conditions before setting out.

Herghelia Lucina and Huțul culture

Herghelia Lucina is located in the Lucava Valley, a small basin in the Obcina Mestecănișului Mountains, and was established in 1856. The Huțul Festival is held each year at Herghelia Lucina. Language, singing and dancing keep Huțul traditions and history alive. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for that year’s edition.

Churches and regional culture

The Church of Sfântului Nicolai in Moldova-Sulița was founded in 1895 and consecrated in 1896. The wooden church of the Sfântul Vasile cel Mare Monastery is also in Moldova-Sulița. Near Lucina stands a stone memorial cross, erected on 10 August 1889. In the past, the art of decorating eggs on a dark background was highly valued in Moldova-Sulița and Breaza.

In 2025, a youth programme included a high-altitude hike to Mount Știrbu, which is 1,477 metres high, as well as entering Peștera Lucavei. A 2025 youth programme also included visits to Cheile Lucavei and a sulphur spring. If you plan a hike or cave visit yourself, check current access arrangements in advance.
