The travel experience in Fundu Moldovei ranges from churches, traditional architecture and winter customs to routes through the landscape. The Via Transilvanica passes through the commune, and a geological protected area lies in the village. When planning, you can therefore first decide whether cultural history or outdoor activities should take priority.

Culture, architectural history and local traditions

Two churches offer a chronological introduction to the area’s architectural history: the “Sfântul Nicolae” Church in Fundu Moldovei de Sus was built in 1800; the “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Dimitrie” Church in Fundu Moldovei was built between 1819 and 1822. The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Monastery in Orata is one of the commune’s tourist attractions. It was consecrated on September 26, 1954. The grave of Dr. Traian Popovici is also located near the wooden church in Fundu Moldovei.

Traditional residential architecture can also be explored in several forms. The commune’s house type evolved from a single-room dwelling to an intermediate form with a cold entrance area, pantry and one room, and then to a house with two rooms and a central entrance area. The “Gospodăria Fundu Moldovei” ensemble in the commune is dated to 1876–1900. A traditional house from Colacu, built in 1901, is on display at the Village Museum and Museum of Folk Art in Bucharest.

An ethnographic museum is located in the village of Fundu Moldovei, near the Dimitrie Gusti School. Before visiting, it is advisable to check visitor arrangements. Traditional domestic crafts still practiced in the commune include weaving, processing sheepskins, sewing and embroidery. Winter customs are also part of local culture: masks are used in the “Capra” custom; during the winter house-visiting ritual, older children use the “Buhai,” a bagpipe typical of the region that produces rough sounds.

Traditions associated with fixed dates include the church’s patronal feast on October 26, the feast of Saint Demetrius, and the national Orthodox religious choral music festival “Buna Vestire” on March 25. “Balul gospodarilor” is associated with the second day of Easter, while the folk music group festival “Rapsod Ilie Cazacu” is associated with Saint Elias’s Day. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the current date in advance. Cultural history also includes a performance outside Romania: in 1937, a group of farmers from Fundu Moldovei took part in a major folk festival at London’s Albert Hall, performing traditional music, dances and customs.

Another local feature is the registered range of traditional dairy products from Deluț Cow Farm. It includes smoked Deluț cheese, kneaded Deluț cheese, Deluț whey cheese and Deluț cheese.

Routes and landscapes around Fundu Moldovei

The limestone cliff on Pârâul Cailor, also known as “La Stânca,” is a 1,000 m² geological protected area in the village of Fundu Moldovei, in the Obcina Feredeului. It offers a clearly defined landscape feature alongside the cultural attractions. At the entrance to the village there is also a small gate with the village name carved into the wood.

The Via Transilvanica passes through Fundu Moldovei. The 136-kilometre section in Suceava County runs through the commune; the stage from Fundu Moldovei to Vatra Dornei is rated moderate. From Fundu Moldovei, the route initially follows the Arseneasa River valley before leading into forest and meadows. The route and difficulty rating provide different kinds of guidance: one describes the sequence of landscapes, while the other gives the rating for the specified stage.

For a bike ride, there is the “Fundu Moldovei – Botuş – Fundu Moldovei” loop. Its starting point is in the commune, by Arseneasa stream. Together with the Via Transilvanica, it offers a second perspective on the area: one is a cycling loop, the other a long-distance hiking route with a described stage. The cultural attractions and routes can therefore be considered different focuses for a stay, rather than combined into a prescribed itinerary.
