Forests, rivers, and access

The commune lies in the lower basin of the Moldovița River in the mountain region of the Obcinele Bucovinei. The Moldovița is a tributary of the Moldova River; the Dragoșa, Frumosu, and Deia streams also flow through the commune. The forest area covers 7,286 hectares of deciduous and coniferous forest. The Obcina Feredeului, with elevations between 1,300 and 1,400 m, forms Frumosu’s western boundary. To the east, the Obcina Mare marks the boundary, reaching an elevation of 1,200 m.

Frumosu lies on the tourist route to Moldovița Monastery, a UNESCO monument. The commune can be reached via the road along the Moldovița Valley on DJ 176 between Vama and Moldovița. The valley and the named mountain ranges can therefore serve as geographic reference points when planning your trip.

Churches and traditional crafts

The commune’s central church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God. It dates from 1866 and was restored by 2005. Traditional architecture in Frumosu includes decorative woodwork on porches, doors, window frames, wells, gates, and fences. This woodwork can be found on everything from building features to wells and enclosures.

The commune preserves Bukovinian folk arts such as weaving, sewing, and decorating Easter eggs. Traditional costumes embroidered with beads and marten fur are also part of these traditions. Local crafts also include blacksmithing, shirt sewing, leather belt making, wood carving, and wickerwork. In Deia, a village in the commune, a 2021 report describes the Church of Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr as a wooden building on a stone foundation.

Festivals and traditional performances

The Măsura oilor, the leading of sheep up to the summer pastures, is a continuing pastoral festival in Frumosu. It takes place in early May in connection with the formation of sheepfolds or the herds’ departure for their summer grazing areas. Check the specific date and program locally when planning your trip.

The Brăduțul ensemble from the commune of Frumosu performs Christmas traditions such as caroling, Urături, the “Jocul caprei,” and the “Jocul ursului.” The program also includes vocal performances and regional folk dances. These customs offer a glimpse into the commune’s musical and dance traditions.

The former mine at La Borți

At La Borți, a former sulfur mine was modernized and converted into a tourist mine. A 2022 description reports white stalactites in the western gallery: they are mostly round or cone-shaped and range from 1 to 40 cm in size. Check whether access is currently possible before visiting.
