In Comuna Sucevița, images shape an entire church: its interior and exterior walls are completely covered with 16th-century murals. The north wall also features the large-scale iconographic composition “Ladder of the Virtues.” Christ is depicted on its 33rd step. In the monastery church, you can therefore encounter both the wall-to-wall paintings and a single motif whose composition can be examined closely.

Monastery, Museum and Local Memory

The Sucevița Monastery is strikingly designed from the outside as well: high walls with battlements, heavy oak gates and defensive towers at the corners give the complex its fortified form. The architecture and the murals offer different ways to experience the site—here, the enclosed form of the walls; there, the images inside the church.

The monastery museum holds one of the richest and most valuable collections of medieval art in Moldavia. The collection items mentioned include the burial shrouds of rulers Ieremia, dating from 1606, and Simion Movilă, dating from 1609. Another outstanding piece is an epitaph from 1597, decorated with 10,000 pearls. Each of the three dates gives the objects a specific historical context.

The cemetery church tells a different story of construction: it was rebuilt in 1772 together with its stone bell tower. The memorial monument also provides a point of reference in time and place. It stands beside the road at the entrance to the commune from the direction of Rădăuți and was erected in 1883 after the visit of Austrian Archduke Rudolf.

The ethnographic museum at the “Dimitrie Vatamaniuc” school displays objects that illustrate the way of life of the local community’s ancestors. Traditional clothing in Sucevița includes embroidered shirts, ițari trousers, belts or waistbands decorated with beads, fur-trimmed waistcoats and, for women, Catrințe skirts. Clothing and everyday objects offer different insights into local culture.

Customs and Dates Throughout the Year

New Year customs in Sucevița include masked performances featuring goats, bears, horses and Turks, as well as folk theatre during the winter holidays. If you would like to experience these traditions, check the current program locally. Zilele Suceviței is celebrated annually in June; check the current dates before your trip as well. The Winter Holidays Festival is associated with December 27. Check its current program too.

Forest, Water and Different Routes

The Pădurea Voievodeasa forest reserve covers 102 hectares and is an old mixed forest. The Sucevița stream crosses the commune from west to east. These two landscape features have different points of emphasis: the reserve is described by its area and forest type, while the stream is described by the direction in which it crosses the commune.

Sucevița also has a network of five or six Nordic walking routes with varying levels of difficulty. The signs indicate the direction and the distance remaining. As route conditions and signage should be checked locally, it is advisable to check for current information before setting out. Another point of reference is Route 05MB40: it starts in front of Sucevița Monastery and follows the tourist trail marked with a blue cross. The Bucovina section of the Via Transilvanica passes through the Sucevița depression.

Getting Around Sucevița

For road navigation, national road DN17A is a specific point of reference: it crosses Sucevița and connects Rădăuți with Câmpulung Moldovenesc. Together with the stream running from west to east, this clearly distinguishes the road connection from the landscape axis. The places, buildings, customs and routes mentioned offer different starting points for shaping your visit around your own cultural or landscape interests.
