Straja Commune combines well-documented local history with a weaving tradition that is still maintained and specific destinations in the surrounding landscape. At the centre of the commune stands the “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church; outside the village centre, described routes lead to Vârful Scorbura and Schitul Daniil Sihastrul. This gives you two distinct focuses for your plans: churches and village culture on the one hand, and time outdoors on the other.
Cultural History in Straja
The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church of Straja I Parish is located in the centre of the commune. It was built between 1867 and 1870 and first consecrated in October 1877. The construction period and first consecration are therefore several years apart—two distinct dates in the history of the place of worship.
The “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” Church marks a different construction phase: it was built between 2010 and 2016 in the classical Moldavian, Ștefanian style. Together, the two churches provide different chronological and architectural reference points for local history.
Casa Muzeu – Straja is also part of this cultural context. It was donated to the Adormirea Maicii Domnului Parish in Straja in 2019 and moved that same year to the parish grounds near the church. Its collection includes numerous old household items gathered in the village, as well as old letters and postcards from the front, prisons and concentration camps, along with medals and decorations from the two world wars. Everyday objects and personal wartime testimonies represent different aspects of the collection.
Casa Juravle is another traditional building with a cultural identity specific to the region. The Church of Sucevița Monastery also belongs to the regional cultural context outside Straja: its interior and exterior walls are entirely decorated with 16th-century murals.
Weaving and Folklore
Traditional weaving for folk costumes is still practised in Straja. This includes the distinctive “Trăistuța de la Straja”. The “Străjăncuța” folklore ensemble preserves authentic songs, dances, Christmas carols and customs across five generations; it was founded in Straja in 1974.
The 2023 edition of “Mândră-i Straja-n sărbătoare” began with religious ceremonies and continued with events focused on culture, education and recognition. It reached its seventh edition. The dated programme brings together religious and cultural themes, but does not imply that the event recurs annually.
Landscape and Routes
The Suceava River crosses Straja from east to west, and Straja is part of the Obcinele Bucovinei. Forests cover a large part of the commune. These details provide a concrete sense of the landscape: the river’s course, the forest cover and the regional setting frame the routes around the village.
An earlier route description led to Vârful Scorbura in Straja from the road to the former CFR station. In this earlier account, the route climbed through the forest after leaving the road. The earlier description gives the summit’s elevation on this route as 980 metres. If you plan to visit, the available route details are a named starting point, a forest ascent and an elevation.
An earlier description of the route to Schitul Daniil Sihastrul also placed its starting point on the road to the former Straja CFR station. The described section from the Suceava Bridge area to the start of the route is given as approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes; the duration may vary depending on conditions. The two route descriptions offer different reference points: for Scorbura, the forest ascent and summit elevation are highlighted; for Schitul, an approximate section duration. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
Regional Orientation
The commune’s road connection to neighbouring communes is provided by DJ 209 G. The Rădăuți–Nisipitu railway line also crosses the commune from east to west. The Muzeul Satului Bucovinean in Suceava displays a Gospodărie Straja originating from Straja as an example of folk architecture. This offers another way to view local building traditions in a regional context.
