Dorna-Arini Commune is located in Țara Dornelor. The Suhard Massif lies to the north, the Călimani Mountains to the south, and the area is bordered to the east by Cheile Zugrenilor. The landscape is mountainous. Part of the Cheile Zugrenilor nature reserve lies within the commune, which describes it as a nature reserve of national importance. In the settlement, the Bistrița flows through the area and divides it into two asymmetrical sections. The commune’s travel profile therefore brings together mountain landscapes, waterways and a specific protected area.
Landscapes of Forest, Water and Pasture
The commune’s ecosystems include forests, rivers and streams, ponds and wetlands. There are also meadows and natural pastures, as well as small agricultural plots in the mountain landscape. This makes it easier to focus on specific aspects of nature: you can choose to explore forests, water or areas shaped by mountain farming, rather than viewing the commune solely through its mountain ranges. The Cheile Zugrenilor nature reserve is a distinct geographical point of reference; part of it lies within the commune.
Two Routes with Different Profiles
The descriptions of both routes were updated in April 2026. Route 05MB20 is challenging and about 22 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of more than 1,500 metres. It follows the Bistriței ridge, passing through clearings and pastures, with views of the Giumalău Massif and the Călimani Mountains. Its highest point is at 1,426 metres, near Mănăstirea Piatra Tăieturii Monastery. The route thus combines a longer course with a clearly identified mountain ridge, open stretches of landscape and viewpoints.
The MTB route 05MB16 has a different profile: it is rated moderate, is 6.8 kilometres long and has 824 metres of descent. Downhill sections account for 90 percent of the route, which follows yellow blaze markings throughout. From Cabana Giumalău, it passes Vârful Bobeica and Piciorul Ruscii before reaching the village of Rusca. There it ends at the concrete bridge connecting with the Vatra Dornei–Poiana Largului–Piatra Neamț main road. Along the way, the route offers views of Dorna-Arini Commune, the Munții Bistriței and the Bistrița Valley. The routes differ in their ratings and stated elevation figures: 05MB20 is challenging and has an elevation difference of more than 1,500 metres; 05MB16 is moderate and has 824 metres of descent.
A Wooden Monastery and Traditional Festivals
The Mănăstirea Acoperământul Maicii Domnului Monastery is located in the village of Gheorghițeni, in Dorna-Arini Commune, about five kilometres from Vatra Dornei. It is built entirely of wood; its wooden bell tower, standing 60 metres tall, is also one of its distinctive architectural features. For visitors interested in culture, it offers a clearly defined point of interest alongside the landscapes and routes.
Festivals are also part of the commune’s profile. The traditional festival “Cântecul cetinii” was organised as part of the tourism project “Cobza de vacanță…la Dorna Arini”; in 2016, it reached its 20th edition. The project also included a festival of winter customs and Christmas carols.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
The commune’s road network includes the DN 17B from Vatra Dornei towards Bicaz and the DJ 174 from Vatra Dornei towards Panaci; local roads branch off from these routes. Check current road conditions before setting off. When choosing a hotel, first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the landscape, the monastery or one of the routes, which vary in difficulty. Then compare the location of a specific offer with your plans and the approach direction that works best for you.
