A former border guard post, a customs house dating from 1809, and a memorial to 346 people give Cornu Luncii a distinct historical character. The town’s history connects the development of Bukovina with memorial sites and cultural events.

Border History and the Great Union

After the Habsburg annexation of northwestern Moldavia in 1774, which became known as Bukovina, Cornu Luncii was a border town. On 6 May 1809, a customs office was established on the Cornu Luncii estate; the former border guard post has been preserved to this day. In November 1918, Stănilești, a village within the commune, was the first place Romanian troops entered to liberate Bukovina. The Poarta Veșniciei Unirii also commemorates the entry of Romanian troops into Bukovina.

The Muzeul Unirii was established on 6 November 2018 in a former border guard post. It houses photographs and documents relating to the Great Union of Romania. The history of the border and customs on the one hand, and the memory of the Union on the other, thus represent different chapters of the region’s past. The former Austrian customs house offers another glimpse into its architectural history: the solid, single-storey rectangular brick building is about 12 metres long and 4.5 metres wide. Check current visiting arrangements before visiting the museum.

Memorial Sites in the Commune

In the centre of the commune is the Panteonul Eroilor. It is dedicated to the 346 heroes from Cornu Luncii associated with the two World Wars, the Revolution, and overseas missions. The monument thus commemorates people from the commune on a broad scale. The historical references differ: the Poarta Veșniciei Unirii commemorates the entry of the troops, while the Pantheon is dedicated to the 346 heroes. This distinction helps visitors see the memorial sites as different places rather than interchangeable stops.

Ioan Grosaru and Local Culture

The Casa Memorială Ion Grosaru is in Păiseni. Its collection includes personal belongings, the poet-hero’s military uniform, awards, and books. Păiseni is also associated with a literary and artistic programme held annually at the monument to Ioan Grosaru; the Festivalul de poezie „Ioan Grosaru” is based there too. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates in advance.

The Festivalul Produselor Tradiționale offers a different cultural perspective. At the 2023 edition, traditional home-cooked dishes were available, including sarmale, lamb stew, cheese flatbreads, zacuscă, and traditional meat products. Local and established performers also took the stage. This describes the programme of that edition; food and performances may vary at other editions.

Choosing Where to Stay

The DN 2E national road crosses the commune from west to east and connects the Gura Humorului–Fălticeni area. This helps orient you to the location of the commune; it does not provide information about a specific accommodation address or travel times. For a stay focused on history and memorial culture, Cornu Luncii offers several different themes to explore: border history, the Great Union, the commune’s collective memory, and the literary heritage of Ioan Grosaru.
