The Piatra Țibăului nature reserve gives Cârlibaba a tangible connection to nature: it is nationally protected and classified geologically and palaeontologically. An event in February, Bukovina history and the possibility of a cheese tasting along a named route add further reasons to travel to this focus.

Piatra Țibăului and the protected areas

The national geological and palaeontological nature reserve lies within the administrative territory of the Cârlibaba commune. Piatra Țibăului covers 20.30 hectares and lies at an altitude of 1,200 metres, where the Țibău Valley meets the Bistrița Aurie River. These details describe different aspects of the same area: 20.30 hectares indicates its size, 1,200 metres its elevation, and the confluence provides a geographical reference point. This puts the nature focus into context with specific measurements.

The Găina–Lucina SCI site includes the protected areas of Tinovul Găina–Lucina and Cheile Lucavei. Thus, in addition to Piatra Țibăului, these two protected areas are also named as part of the SCI site.

A February date for Serbările Zăpezii

Every year in February, the “Serbările Zăpezii” event takes place in Cârlibaba. The programme includes winter sports competitions, performances and entertaining games. The February festival offers a different travel focus from the area’s nature and cultural themes and provides a clear point in time for planning. If you plan to travel for the event, confirm the dates of that year’s edition locally.

Bukovina history in a church and monument

The Biserica Romano-Catolică din Cârlibaba was built in 1900 for the Catholic community in this multi-ethnic region of Bukovina. In the centre of Cârlibaba, the “Monument comemorativ Bogdan I” stands on a rock. It commemorates Bogdan I’s passage through the area in 1359. The dates refer to different things: 1900 is the year the church was built, while 1359 is the year commemorated by the monument. Together, the two sites offer a tangible way to explore different aspects of local history.

Route connection and local cuisine

The Cârlibaba–below Vârful Omului route crosses a tourist trail marked with a red stripe. The trail connects the Rodna and Suhard Mountains and continues to the Călimani Mountains. Check the trail markings and conditions before setting out. This lets you use the route information as a planning guide without assuming what trail conditions will be like on the day of your visit.

Along the route, shepherds can arrange a small tasting of various cheeses for tourists for a fee and prepare Balmoș. This traditional dish is made from cornmeal, whey, sour cream and curd cheese. If you plan to take part in the tasting, check locally whether it can be arranged. This helps you keep both its possible availability and the stated cost in mind.

Getting there via DN18

The DN18 national road leads to Cârlibaba via Sighetu Marmației, Vișeu de Sus, Borșa and Botoș. This sequence of places provides a concrete starting point for planning your journey. It differs from the tourist trail crossed by the Cârlibaba–below Vârful Omului route: DN18 describes the road access, while the marked trail connects mountain ranges.
