Veștem lies at an elevation of 448 m in Șelimbăr commune. The commune is located in the center of the Sibiu Depression, along the middle course of the Cibin River. For geographical context, it is useful to distinguish between these details: the elevation refers to Veștem, while the depression and river describe the wider area of the commune. Another reference point is the DN1. It runs through Veștem and heads west from there toward Avrig, Făgăraș and Brașov. These details operate at different scales: the elevation locates Veștem itself, while the road corridor indicates western directions for further planning.

Churches and Monastery History

One of the churches in Veștem, the Biserica „Cuvincioasa Paraschiva”, was built in 1842 and painted in the same year. Further painting work is recorded for 1852. Construction and the first painting therefore took place in the same year; the additional painting work followed ten years later. An earlier written reference appears in an entry from 1683, which records the sending of a Gospel to the church in Veștem. These are two different kinds of historical reference: the Biserica is associated with construction and painting, while the entry concerns the sending of a Gospel.

The foundation stone for Schitul Veștem was laid in 2007 on land donated by several families from Veștem. Pilgrims from the surrounding villages and other parts of Romania attended the consecration of the Schitul’s church, „Înălțarea Domnului”. A 2023 description lists a church, a cell block, a summer altar and other outbuildings at Schitul „Înălțarea Domnului”. The foundation stone, consecration and described buildings offer different points of reference for a cultural-historical perspective on the complex.

Routes and Other Local Points of Interest

One route runs from „La Trei Morminte” through Veștem to Mohu. Another route leads to the Veștem pasture, descends along a sandy track and then follows the river to Mohu and onward to Bungard. The first route description mainly gives a sequence of places; the second also describes the route and its surface. If you include the second route in your plans, take the sandy section into account: trail surfaces can change, so it is advisable to check current conditions.

For planning purposes, the road corridor and route descriptions answer different questions: the DN1 places Veștem westward toward Avrig, Făgăraș and Brașov; the routes describe specific paths through Veștem to Mohu. This lets you consider regional road orientation and an individual route separately.

Lacul Taberei lies between Veștem and Mohu. A local report published in November 2023 describes a historical connection between Lacul Taberei and Mihai Viteazu’s camp. A county tourism study from June 2023 lists fishing lakes 1 and 2 near Tocile/Veștem as facilities for recreational and sport fishing. Thus, alongside the churches and routes, there is also a historical point of interest at the lake and a separate fishing-related attraction to choose from.
