A route to Cabana Suru and an early written mention of the village offer two different points of interest for a stay in Sebeșu de Sus. The hut is located on Muchia Moașei in the Făgăraș Mountains at an altitude of 1,450 metres. The mountain route leads from Sebeșu de Sus via Muchia Moașei and Cabana Suru onward to Vf. Suru. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the section to the hut from the route that continues beyond it.
Valley, river and protected area
Sebeșu de Sus lies in the Valea Moașei valley. The Moașa River, also known as Moașa Sebeșului, is 13 kilometres long and a tributary of the Sebeș. The distance refers to the river, not to a section of the hiking route. In addition, the entire built-up area of Sebeșu de Sus is included in the SPA Piemontul Făgăraș protected area. These geographical references concern different things: the village’s location in the valley, the river’s length and classification, and the built-up area’s inclusion in the protected area.
Mountain route to Cabana Suru and Vf. Suru
Along the section over Muchia Moașei, birch and alder thickets, old beech forest and meadows shape the landscape; the route offers views of the Lotru Mountains and the Sibiu Basin. The trail is defined not only by its destination, Cabana Suru, but also by these specific landscape features. The section from Sebeșu de Sus to Cabana Suru is given a duration of three and a half hours and is marked with a red triangle. The onward route from Sebeșu de Sus via Cabana Suru to Vf. Suru has a moderate technical difficulty level and a high physical difficulty level. Hiking boots, warm outerwear, rain protection, water and food are recommended. The time estimate and difficulty rating relate to different planning considerations: the former applies to the section of trail to the hut, while the latter, together with the equipment recommendation, applies to the route to Vf. Suru.
Local history and landmark
The first written mention of Sebeșu de Sus dates to 1383; at the time, the village was mentioned as part of the Tălmaciului domain. Biserica Sfinții Apostoli Petru și Pavel is listed as a historic monument under code SB-II-m-B-12544. The date and monument designation provide context for different aspects: the village’s written history and the status of the church mentioned. Traditional livelihoods include livestock raising, farming, fruit growing and beekeeping. These activities complement the historical points of reference with a local history of economic activity and work.
The Făgăraș Fest
Sebeșu de Sus was selected as the permanent annual venue for the Făgăraș Fest in Valea Moașei. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the dates for the year you have in mind. The date for the chosen year determines the timing of your stay.
