The commune of Porumbacu de Jos lies at the northern foot of the Făgăraș Mountains and stretches along both banks of the Olt. Trails from Porumbacu de Jos lead toward Șaua Cleopatrei and Cabana Negoiu; churches, a wooden house dating from 1899, and historic craft traditions add to the village’s appeal. Landscape between the Mountains and the Olt
The Făgăraș Piedmont SPA partly includes the built-up area of the village of Porumbacu de Jos. The commune also contains areas of the “Golul alpin al Munților Făgăraș între Suru și Podragu” nature reserve. In a 2025 article, the “Mini Deltă” landscape near Porumbacu de Jos was described as a semi-natural ecosystem and presented as suitable for camping and fishing. These village and commune areas offer different perspectives on the landscape.
Churches, Crafts, and Village History
Wooden House No. 309 is part of Porumbacu de Jos’s built cultural heritage and dates from 1899. The former “Fostul Oficiu Poştal Tranzit” post office is now used as a residence. Two churches in the village add their own historical accents: the Orthodox “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church was built between 1850 and 1854, and the Greek Catholic “Sfântul Nicolae” Church between 1845 and 1851. Four kilometers southeast of Porumbacu de Jos, in Sărata, stands the “Nașterea Domnului” Church, built between 1800 and 1806.
The history of local crafts also goes back a long way. Woodworking in Porumbacu de Jos has a tradition dating back to the 17th century. Rural household crafts involving the processing of sheepskins and leather are also documented for the period from 1640 to 1680. One custom that marks the annual calendar is the “Ceata de feciori” on Christmas Eve: the village’s young men go from house to house singing.
Hiking Trails with Different Destinations
The marked trail to Șaua Cleopatrei leads south from Porumbacu de Jos via Porumbacu de Sus. As far as Porumbacu de Sus, it follows a paved county road. From Porumbacu de Sus, the route continues for another 16 kilometers along a forest road to a marble limestone quarry; the actual mountain trail begins there. This sequence helps with navigation: the forest road and the start of the mountain trail are clearly distinguished.
The route from Porumbacu de Jos to Cabana Negoiu is listed as taking 6 to 6½ hours. It covers 20 kilometers on an unpaved road, followed by another 1½ hours on a hiking trail. The route runs along the right bank of the Râul Mare al Porumbacului and passes a marble limestone quarry 15 kilometers from Porumbacu de Jos. At an elevation of 1,410 meters, a path branches off to the right toward Cascada Șerbotei. This route combines distance, a riverside stretch, and a turnoff to a waterfall, although these destinations are not in the village itself.
Getting There and Other Activities
Kayak trips on the Porumbacu are offered in the Valea Porumbacului area. The route in this area is accessible via Porumbacu de Jos railway station by Regio train on the Sibiu–Brașov line.
