Bixad combines religious heritage with a striking geological destination: Piatra Bixadului. The area also has mineral springs known locally by a name of their own, and the ruins of the Belavar earthwork fortress nearby. This geographical distinction is important when planning: the route to Piatra starts in Bixad, and the monastery is also located there; Belavar, by contrast, is in the surrounding area, not within Bixad itself. This gives the destination a thematic range spanning monastic culture, geology, and archaeological history.

Monastery Church and Religious Tradition

The church of Bixad Monastery is dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Construction began in 1769, and the church was consecrated in 1771. The church houses a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, which was brought to Bixad in 1853. It attracts believers from the neighboring counties of Bihor, Sălaj, Maramureș, and Bistrița-Năsăud. A pilgrimage takes place at the monastery every year on August 15. If you would like to travel for this occasion, check the event information in advance.

Another church in Bixad is named ā€œNașterea Maicii Domnuluiā€ and dates to 1881. This distinguishes two different periods: the monastery church built in the late 18th century and a church dating from the 19th century. In Bixad, the ā€œMersul Ć®n procesieā€ tradition is associated with the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

Piatra Bixadului: Geology and Route

Piatra Bixadului consists of monolithic andesite and forms part of an extrusive volcanic dome in the Oaș Mountains. Here, ā€œmonolithicā€ describes the continuous rock mass; the volcanic dome identifies its geological formation. As a natural attraction, Piatra Bixadului appeals to hikers and nature lovers.

The route starts in Bixad at the turnoff to the monastery and passes through forests and meadows. Trail conditions can vary seasonally, so it is worth checking them before setting out. The rocky area around Piatra can be particularly dangerous when wet; plan to take extra care there.

Belavar in the Surrounding Area

The ruins of the fortified earthwork fortress of Belavar are located in the ā€œCoasta Boineștilorā€ area near Bixad. It dates from the Late Bronze Age, approximately 1150 to 950/900 BCE; evidence of settlement in later periods supplements this dating. History enthusiasts and hikers can explore the ruins via trails from Boinești or Călinești-Oaș. Check local access conditions before visiting.

Mineral Springs and Local Culture

Locals traditionally call the mineral springs ā€œborcut.ā€ The former spa operation at Băile Bixad has ended; the baths have been closed. If a spa visit is part of your plans, check the local situation in advance.

Another local feature is the traditional mushroom sculpture ā€œCiuperca din Borcut,ā€ located next to the town hall in the center of Bixad commune.
