Tarcău brings together a river valley, hiking destinations, mountain scenery and cultural attractions. The village stretches along the river of the same name, a right-bank tributary of the Bistrița. The commune lies in the Eastern Carpathians and has a typically mountainous character. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide in advance whether you want to focus your stay on nature and outdoor activities or on art and local history.
River Valley and Mountain Scenery
Along the Bistrița, elevations within the commune range from 370 to 390 meters; at the summit of Grindușu, they reach a maximum of 1,664 meters. The contrast illustrates the range of landscapes in the commune. Bolovăniș Waterfall is also located in the commune and is considered a natural attraction. Goșman Forest Reserve is here too, and is considered a weekend hiking destination. Trail conditions may vary.
Hiking Trails and Activities
Marked trails and forest roads through the Tarcău Valley lead to a protected area for capercaillies in the Brateș (Tărhăuș) Fauna Reserve. This makes the landscape interesting from a species conservation perspective as well. Several hiking trails start at or near Sihăstria Tarcăului Monastery; check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific hike. The Muntele Lung ridge separates the Tarcău Valley from the Bicaz Valley, allowing paragliders to explore both valleys. This activity depends on the season and weather. The Tarcău Mountains offer favorable conditions for off-road activities; availability and route conditions may vary. River excursions and rafting are other activities associated with the Tarcău and the Bistrița; specific providers and availability may vary.
Conditions differ depending on the activity: trail conditions may change when hiking in Goșman Forest Reserve, while paragliding at Muntele Lung depends on the season and weather. Take these differences into account when planning your activities.
Art and Local History
The artist Iulia Hălăucescu was born in Tarcău in 1924; the museum dedicated to her was founded in 2003. Its permanent exhibition includes 123 paintings and 149 objects, including ceramics, old icons painted on wood, woodwork, historical furniture and studio tools. The furniture and documents recreate the atmosphere of the family home where Hălăucescu spent her childhood. Her works are displayed alongside objects that illustrate the personal context of her life.
The monuments also reflect different historical themes. The monument to the heroes who fell in the First World War depicts a Romanian soldier attacking; a marble plaque bears the names of the heroes. The Unknown Soldier Monument is part of the commune’s cultural heritage and is dedicated to the local heroes of the Second World War. The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Tarcău village was built between 1906 and 1912. Tarcău Monastery lies in the valley of the river of the same name. Near Poiana Crivaia in Tarcău commune stands the Queen Maria Monument, in the form of a Byzantine cross. It was erected at the initiative of the Neamț County Museum Complex and the Piatra-Neamț Deanery, with contributions from the faithful and priests of the commune.
